By JACK CAMERON for WEEKLY VOLCANO 4/10/26 |
The Blue Mouse continues its run of Super Mario Galaxy. With the popularity of The Super Mario Movie, it’s not surprising that Super Mario Galaxy is showing for another week every night at 7:00 p.m. Matinee showings are on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 4:15 p.m.
On Saturday, April 11, the Blue Mouse is showing the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show at 11:30 p.m. Costumes and participation are encouraged.
On Friday, April 17, Friday Night Frights presents the 2003 horror classic Freddy vs. Jason at 10:00 p.m.
You still have a chance to catch the controversial and engrossing Robert Pattinson and Zendaya film The Drama at the Grand Tacoma Cinema.
The science fiction blockbuster Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, is still playing. Fun fact: the astronauts on the Artemis II mission watched this movie while waiting to launch to the moon.
There was so much going on last week that I forgot to mention Fantasy Life, which is also playing at the Grand. Fantasy Life is a comedy about a young man who becomes a nanny for a family of three girls. Written, directed, and starring Matthew Shear, the cast includes Amanda Peet and Judd Hirsch. This is the first film Shear has written and directed, but it’s clear that he picked up a few things from the filmmakers he’s worked with as an actor, including Noah Baumbach. Fantasy Life is soulful, funny, and has heart. It’s the sort of movie I really wish they’d make more of. There’s more drama and character in something like this than in all three Avatar movies.
If you hurry, you may be able to catch the absolutely bonkers Dead Body. This is a movie that neglects any tradition or tropes and simply does what it wants. Filmmaker Grace Glowicki has made a film that defies description. I don’t know if it’ll have a second week or not, but there’s a showing at 4:10 p.m. on Thursday, April 9.
If you’d prefer a classic, you can see the 1982 movie that made Arnold Schwarzenegger a star: Conan the Barbarian is playing at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11. If you’ve never seen it on the big screen, you should take the opportunity.
Also on Saturday, April 11, there is a special showing of Frybread Face and Me. This movie about two young Navajo cousins who bond during a summer at their grandmother’s ranch in Arizona is presented with the Tahoma Indian Center as part of Sovereign Cinema, a film series centering on Indigenous stories of reclamation, resistance, and resilience. After the screening, join others in the lounge for complimentary frybread and traditional medicinal tea from Rose Island Farm.
The Tahoma Indian Center has a limited number of free tickets available for community members. Email admin@tahomaindiancenter.org if you would like to claim a ticket.
On Wednesday, April 15, the Grand Tacoma Cinema is showing Freaky Friday (the 2003 Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis version) as part of their Craft Night series.
And coming next week as part of the Science on Film series is the 1998 slacker masterpiece The Big Lebowski.
