Johnny’s Dock has returned to Tacoma under new ownership, and the changes are more than just cosmetic. Gurwinder “Gary” Purewal and his wife Poojadeep Purewal have taken over the waterfront spot at 1900 East D Street and marina, reopening after years of closure. The restaurant now blends its longtime Pacific Northwest seafood identity with Indian-inspired flavors, a nod to the Purewals’ roots and their vision for something fresh.

The menu relaunch includes items like butter masala prawns, Indian-spiced clam chowder, tandoori-seasoned salmon, and sides like naan and rice pilafs—all alongside classics such as fish & chips. Dining rooms, decks, and dockside tables are designed to appeal to both longtime customers and newcomers seeking flavorful twists.

Under the Purewals, live music has become a regular part of the restaurant’s reopening strategy. The new ownership is scheduling weekend music events: local bands on Fridays and after-dinner or dockside music on Saturdays. One upcoming event is Maia Santell and House Blend on Sunday, October 12 at 6:00 p.m., performing jazz, blues, Latin, and other popular favorites.

For Tacoma residents, the return of Johnny’s Dock offers a layered experience: familiar waterfront views and heritage with seafood dishes, infused with new culinary direction, flavor souvenirs (like the famous Johnny’s Dock seasoning salt), and a revived agenda for live music. It’s a sign that the waterfront dining scene is getting a textured reinvestment, balancing nostalgia with innovation.
