The gallery will host Northwest artists in addition to those based internationally.
"Like other small businesses, art galleries struggled during the COVID pandemic, and many didn't survive," Gary Wagner, a landscape photographer based in Northern California whose work will be featured at the gallery, said in a release. "Artists have been used to paying for gallery memberships, wall space, or exhibitions to get their work in front of customers — but without having sophisticated marketing or internet expertise to sell online as well. Rather than spending lots of time and effort finding customers, it's more important for artists to focus instead on creativity and the development of their art."
The new venue is described as a "low-friction partnership without financial barriers or restrictions." It will cost artists a small commission fee once a piece of work has sold, according to the release.
The gallery is located at: 1328 Market St, Tacoma, WA 98402
The gallery will be open 3 p.m. – 8 p.m.

The seven-member group has had continuous success on worldwide music charts, and their music videos continue to rack up tens of millions of views, including their recent release, "Sweet Venom," which is currently at 45 million.

7th Annual Tacoma Day of Remembrance at Washington State History Museum – May 16
[image] history
Historian Tamiko Nimura presents the 7th Annual Tacoma Day of Remembrance at the Washington State History Museum! All ages are welcome and please share this event—K-12 educators get free clock hours!
I'll have an interactive printmaking activity table at the resource fair with artist Yuka Petz to print free keepsake posters from the linocut (attached) I made. The poster can be used for the procession to show your solidarity and remember the Japanese American incarceration. Thank you to Line Break Press for typeset & pre-letterpress printing!
From the Washington State Historical Society:
On May 17 and 18, 1942, through Executive Order 9066, signed by President Franklin Roosevelt, over 700 Japanese Americans were forcibly evacuated from Tacoma’s Union Station and sent to Pinedale Assembly Center near Fresno, California.
Though some Japanese Americans eventually returned to Tacoma, the city’s Japantown was never the same. Each year, Japanese American Days of Remembrance are held around the nation to commemorate the anniversary of this unconstitutional mass incarceration.
Join us at the Washington State History Museum for the 7th Annual Japanese American Day of Remembrance next month on Thursday, May 16, from 3:30 to 8:00 PM. This FREE event honors and remembers Tacoma’s Japanese American community, offering a rich program that connects us to their history and legacy.
Dive into an interactive printing activity led by artists Yoshi Nakagawa and Yuka Petz and experience live performances by Fuji Taiko and Kabuki Academy from 5:30 to 6:00 PM, followed by a special procession from the Washington State History Museum’s Remembrance exhibit to Union Station at 6:00 PM.
Finally, a panel conversation, “Making the Invisible Visible: 'Righting' Asian American and Pacific Islander Histories,” moderated by public historian Tamiko Nimura, will give historical context to this event as part of our “Scholarly Selections” series from 6:30 to 7:30 PM.

The Puyallup Tribe of Indians Land Into Trust Act transfers land along the Tacoma waterfront to the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs, allowing the Tribe to expand its reservation and access to federal benefits associated with it.

Help name the County's new litter vacuum truck! Here’s how to participate:
• Submit name ideas: People who live in unincorporated Pierce County can submit their name ideas through Friday, May 3, at www.PierceCountyWa.gov/LitterTruck.
The submission form is available in several languages.
• Vote: Visit the website May 10-20 to vote for your favorite name.
Find out the name: The name will be announced on May 24 during National Public Works Week.
About the Truck:
The truck will respond to reports of litter along County roads in unincorporated Pierce County in support of the County’s roadside litter removal program. This work helps protect the environment and our water quality.
The truck has a 16-inch-diameter suction hose attached to its side that can vacuum up scattered litter and smaller, lighter bags of dumped garbage. The truck can also vacuum up roadside leaves during the fall season. This will help keep leaves out of the storm drainage system in an effort to reduce roadway flooding.
The County is collecting data to develop the truck’s regular route and identify sites with reoccurring litter, which will appear in an online map later this year.

April is National Volunteer Month and Earth Month, a time to recognize the contributions of Metro Parks Tacoma volunteers. These volunteers are integral to education, conservation, leadership, and community service in the park district, and are key to the agency's mission.
Volunteers also form a significant part of the alternative workforce, a new concept in workforce development. This concept promotes diversity, talent retention, and cost-effectiveness. In 2023, about 2,094 community members volunteered 73,815 hours, valued at an estimated $2,777,658. This greatly improved the quality of parks, zoos, programs, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.
Volunteers serve in various roles across the District. They work as educators, historical interpreters, youth sports coaches, environmental stewards, advisory council and committee members, foundation board members, and supporters of parks, community centers, zoos, special projects, and programs.
In late April, volunteers will participate in Parks Appreciation Day service activities at four District sites. Their time, skills, and passion are invaluable to Metro Parks and crucial to the operation of a top-tier parks and recreation system.
In honor of these contributions, the Board of Park Commissioners will celebrate April as National Volunteer Month. They express their gratitude to the dedicated individuals who volunteer their time to support community spaces, programs, and residents. The Board of Park Commissioners of the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma adopted this proclamation at a meeting on April 8, 2024.

A new waterfront park commemorating Tacoma’s history and offering unique play spaces for children is now open.
Melanie Jan LaPlant Dressel Park sits on .75 acres at 1147 Dock St. along Thea Foss Waterway. It took about one year for the $4.6 million project to be completed, although the vision and fundraising for the park dates back much further.
A Northwest-themed play area includes a curvy metal slide coming down from a 36-foot climbing tower reminiscent of a 200-foot smokestack that stood on the property in the early 1900s when it was a heating plant.
In a throwback to the industrial past of the site, there is also a log jam play area.
A 50-foot pedestrian bridge in the center of the park connects to the play tower. Under the bridge, a concrete walkway extends from Dock Street to a viewing platform of the shoreline where visitors can see downtown Tacoma, Mount Rainier and a marina.

By Kimberly Swetland
A multi-year debt collection case concerning financing at the Point Ruston development concluded on Friday with an investment-lender group securing a judgment exceeding $91 million. The case involved the Waterfront Market at Ruston and the site's parking garage, which are set to cover a significant portion of the debt owed by AURC III, representing a consortium of foreign investors through the American United EB-5 Regional Center of Portland, Oregon.
The genesis of the debt stemmed from 132 investors contributing $500,000 each, totaling $66 million, which AURC III utilized to extend a loan to the site. This loan was initially granted to Point Ruston Phase II LLC, with the main development entity, Point Ruston LLC, providing a guarantee.
Last year, AURC III secured a partial summary judgment against Point Ruston Phase II LLC. Following a court order last fall, the scope of potential repayment widened, with Point Ruston LLC being jointly liable with Point Ruston Phase II LLC for the full debt amount.
Russell Knight, attorney for AURC III, emphasized the significance of the judgment against Point Ruston LLC, as it owns key components of the site instrumental in satisfying the debt. The breakdown of the owed amount was determined in the trial's first phase, while the terms for foreclosure to recover the judgment were established in Friday's ruling, marking the trial's second phase.
Attorney Jack Krona, representing the LLCs involved, did not provide comment post-judgment. However, in a pretrial brief from January, Krona indicated that Point Ruston LLC retained its right to appeal, reserving its defenses previously dismissed by summary judgment. Krona also lodged objections to certain fees and the foreclosure decree's format.
Pierce County Superior Court Judge Shelly Speir-Moss issued the judgment totaling $91,701,080.89 against Point Ruston LLC and Point Ruston Phase II LLC. The accompanying foreclosure decree instructed the sale of parcels linked to the AURC debt, including the Waterfront Market at Ruston and the parking garage property, with some sections yet to be developed. The foreclosure sale, anticipated in May, will likely witness AURC making a credit bid to offset the judgment. A one-year statutory redemption period permits foreclosed entities to reclaim the sites within the specified timeframe.
The parking garage/market area has been subject to prior legal disputes, including a previous foreclosure action initiated in 2020 by Serpanok Construction. In March, Serpanok withdrew its ownership claim in AURC's case and transferred its portion of the site to AURC through a deed in lieu of foreclosure.
Krona contested elements of the foreclosure decree and findings of fact in a March 26 court filing, particularly objecting to the authorization of a deficiency judgment following a deed in lieu of foreclosure.
While the Serpanok family's involvement with Point Ruston has waned, their presence persists through the recent sale of Owens Meats' business at the market to the Kunitsa family. The rebranded store, now known as High Steaks Meat and Deli, continues to operate at Point Ruston.
Point Ruston has faced numerous legal challenges from various LLCs associated with its parcels as investors and subcontractors pursue payment. Knight noted that Friday's judgment stands as the largest ever entered against the development.
