Today, Hilltop Artists alumni can be found in hot shops around the world, at prestigious art schools, and even on every season of a reality TV show about glassblowing. They’re also teachers, techies, welders, gardeners, writers, make-up artists, and professionals in a whole host of fields unrelated to glass. From the beginning, Hilltop Artists’ founders knew that art had the power to engage young people in significant ways that would positively impact their lives, no matter where they landed.
Launched in the summer of 1994, Hilltop Artists started with just 20 students in a former woodshop at Jason Lee Junior High (now named Hilltop Heritage Middle School). The early 90s marked a period of unrest that made national news and Hilltop Artists emerged as part of a community-led effort to give young people in the Hilltop neighborhood a safe place to go during summer break.

Gallery owner and Hilltop parent, Kathy Kaperick, partnered with Tacoma-born glass artist Dale Chihuly to establish a program that would provide local teens with arts instruction taught by established artists. They explored a variety of sculptural mediums, including glass. Lacking proper equipment, they simply heated up Snapple bottles and reshaped them to make something new.
Recognizing the viability and allure of what they started, Hilltop Artists and Tacoma Public Schools developed a partnership that led to the growth of two hot shops over the next several years. Hilltop Heritage now boasts a world class glass art studio that not only sustains the use of up to 170 students a day, but also regularly hosts internationally renowned artists who come to inspire students and the public-alike through Hot Shop Hot Nights - a new iteration of the artist residencies that helped start Hilltop Artists decades ago.
Serving over 600 students a year, ages 12 to 26, Hilltop Artists continues to provide young people with a safe space to grow and thrive. Hilltop Artists’ tuition-free programs use leading youth development practices to welcome students from diverse backgrounds and connect them with tools for social and academic success.
As noted by Syd Bersante, Hilltop Artists Board President, “Hilltop Artists does more than teach our youth the art of glassblowing. It teaches critical thinking, communication, and teamwork. Those problem-solving skills are invaluable to our youth’s development, and to their ability to be successful both now and later in life. As a leader in business, I believe building vocational and interpersonal skills are important. The way Hilltop Artists instills these skills compelled me to join the board and contribute my time and resources.”
[image] hilltop 3
Even as Hilltop Artists has gained national and international recognition, Hilltop Artists remains deeply rooted in the local community. It is involved in partnerships with the Museum of Glass, Tacoma Public Libraries, Pierce County Juvenile Court, and Communities for a Healthy Bay, and is a member of the Arts & Culture Coalition of Pierce County and the Imagine Justice Project. Hilltop Artists played a key role in getting the initial Tacoma Creates cultural access tax initiative passed in 2018 and is on the steering committee for its renewal in 2025. Hilltop Artists is instrumental in taking action for the arts and the youth of Tacoma and Pierce County.
Hilltop Artists Executive Director Dr. Kimberly F. Keith grew up just a few blocks away from Hilltop Heritage Middle School. “Hilltop Artists is in my neighborhood. I wish it had been here when I was a kid. At our core we’re a youth development organization teaching social and life skills through the team-based craft of glassblowing. The process encourages young people to communicate, express themselves, and build relationships while engaged in making art. Those skills help our students grow into community members we want to live next door to and into our leaders of tomorrow. That’s what participation in the arts can do for young people, for all of us really.”
Hilltop Artists will be celebrating its 30th Anniversary throughout the year. Please visit hilltopartists.org to learn more about upcoming events and ways to connect.

🔥About Hilltop Artists 🔥
Founded in 1994, Hilltop Artists is a youth development organization that seeks to engage young people through the medium of glass art. We teach glassblowing and related arts to 600 Pierce County youth, ages 12-25, each year. We support students to explore their creativity, connect to school and with their peers, and to become leaders in their community.
With two glass hot shops located at Tacoma’s Hilltop Heritage Middle School and Silas High School, we offer daytime glass art elective classes, after-school, evening, and summer programs. We offer a leadership program for advanced students, vocational training for alumni aged 18+, and arts engagement for justice-involved girls with the Pierce County Juvenile Court. Most of our glass art instructors are alumni who started with us in middle or high school.
We prioritize students farthest from educational justice and mentor youth so they may achieve their full potential. Our Outreach Services Manager provides basic needs support and referrals related to housing, food security, health, education, and advocacy needs. All services are tuition-free, and any young person may participate regardless of past behavior, attendance, grades, disabilities, or artistic talent.
Named Washington State Organization of the Year in 2020, Hilltop Artists is recognized as one of our nation's most effective arts and youth development organizations. We work to improve high school graduation and college enrollment rates and to build public appreciation and excitement around glass arts. We engage thousands of community members each year through partnerships, public events, installations, and exhibits.

By US Updates
The Northwest Room is home to a diverse collection of poetry, providing a unique perspective on the region's cultural and historical background. A key feature is the Laureate Listening Project, led by Tacoma Poet Laureate Lucas Smiraldo from 2013 to 2015. This project includes audio recordings of community members sharing their experiences of specific places through poetry.
Another significant piece is Mayor John Linck’s poem, “By the Flickering Light of a Fading Fire”. This poem, discovered in his papers, reflects on the transience of life and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
The collection also contains the Tacoma Mountaineers Records, a scrapbook from 1912 to 1916. It includes photographs of mountaineering adventures and poems written by club members, many of whom were women. These poems celebrate adventure, friendship, and nature.
The Northwest Room also stores recordings of the Tacoma Public Library's Book Notes radio program, which aired on KTNT radio on Sundays from the 1950s to the 1970s. The program included book reviews, oral histories, interviews, and poetry readings. Poets such as Michael Stowe and Marietta Conway Kennard can be heard reading their poems.
Finally, the 'Tacoma — Poetry' Clipping files provide a snapshot of the local poetry scene, with articles, pamphlets, programs, and flyers about poetry and poets. The files contain profiles of past Tacoma poet laureates like Kellie Richardson and William J. Kupinse, as well as poems published in local newspapers since the late 1930s. The Northwest Room also has a large collection of local poetry books, featuring works by poets such as Duane Niatum, Alice Rollit Coe, and William W. Chance.

Tacoma Art Museum Announces Ambitious and Expansive [re]Frame Exhibitions
What is the art of the American West? The answer is more expansive than you might imagine. Tacoma Art Museum (TAM) is pleased to announce that [re]Frame: Haub Family Collection of Western American Art, a major reinstallation of the Haub Family Galleries, will open on May 18, 2024. The [re]Frame project meaningfully expands on the stories and perspectives about the art of the American West by opening four brand new exhibitions developed by notable guest curators from around the country who draw inspiration from TAM’s Haub Family Collection.
The Haub Family Collection of Western American Art is one of the highlights of a visit to TAM. The important collection includes approximately 250 works that span the 20th century, with remarkable works from 18th, 19th, and 21st centuries, as well. “The Haub Family Collection has a strong reputation in the Pacific Northwest and beyond, as it includes exceptional paintings and sculptures,” says Andy Maus, executive director of Tacoma Art Museum. “We have been building on this legacy gift in order to prepare for four new exhibitions that will deepen our understanding of the art of the region and provide exemplary leadership for other museums with similar permanent collections.”
[image] art2
The four new exhibitions will open in the Haub Family Galleries and invite visitors to connect with art from and about many important communities in the American West, including Indigenous communities in the southwest and specifically Genízaro communities, the Chinese American experience, and artists in the African and Arab diasporas.
The four new exhibitions are on long-term view at Tacoma Art Museum:
• Finding Home: The Chinese American West on view from May 18, 2024—September 5, 2027;
• Blackness is… the Refusal to be Reduced will be on view from May 18, 2024—March 14, 2027;
• Nepantla: The Land is the Beloved on view from May 18, 2024—September 6, 2026; and
• The Abiqueños and The Artist on view from May 18, 2024—May 31, 2026.
[image] art3
The four separate and distinct exhibitions individually explore a range of important themes about the American West, and in so doing the Haub Family Galleries will demonstrate how western art can be more inclusive of diverse narratives. “The Haub Family Collection of Western American Art provides a wonderful starting point for considering art and ideas about the American West,” stated Faith Brower, Haub Curator of Western American Art. “By pairing the Haub Family Collection with additional artworks, as selected by the guest curators, we can broaden the meaning and relevance of the collection for visitors today.”
The four exhibitions combined will present artwork by 17 contemporary artists who have not often been considered in the context of the art of the American West. “The art of the American West is not static,” said Brower “there are many artists creating work that will further our understanding and deepen our connections to this iconic region.”
Select artists featured:
• Lele Barnett’s exhibition Finding Home: The Chinese American West will present a newly commissioned 65-foot site-specific mural created by Seattle-based artist Monyee Chau that will be paired with a large painted scroll by Zhi Lin, along with artwork from the Haub Family Collection.
• Nikesha Breeze is presenting the work of six contemporary artists in Blackness is… the Refusal to be Reduced that includes a range of media from paintings, drawing, and sculpture to site-specific installations and film.
• Maymanah Farhat’s exhibition Nepantla: The Land is the Beloved will include six artists from the Arab diaspora along with other contemporary work from the museum’s permanent collection, also highlighting a range of mediums including paintings, sculpture, photography, textiles, and more.
• Dr. Patricia Marroquin Norby’s exhibition The Abiqueños and The Artist features two disparate artists, Russel Albert Daniels and Georgia O’Keeffe, in a riveting dialogue.
Tacoma Art Museum’s Haub Family Galleries will be closed in early 2024 to prepare for the major reinstallation. The Haub Family Galleries will open with four new exhibitions on May 18, 2024, in anticipation of the 10-year anniversary of the Haub Family Galleries in November 2024. All exhibitions in the [re]Frame project are organized by Tacoma Art Museum and funded in part by the Terra Foundation for American Art.
[image] art4
Exhibition descriptions:
Finding Home: The Chinese American West honors the Chinese immigrants of the American West. The exhibition touches on the history of racism and violence against the Chinese in America—specifically Tacoma’s exclusionary past—but it also offers artists’ views into Chinese immigrants finding a sense of home and hope. The exhibition will explore the spiritual, the mythical, and the laborious path of these seekers of the American dream in a counter-narrative to the conventional picture of America’s history. Finding Home: The Chinese American West is guest curated by Lele Barnett.
The exhibition Blackness is… the Refusal to be Reduced focuses on contemporary art that explores intertwined concepts of materiality, the body, memory, and resilience. The exhibition centers Blackness, offering a counternarrative to the homogenous story often told in museums, making visible the often invisible with ephemeral materials and conceptual works by contemporary Black western art and artists. Blackness is… the Refusal to be Reduced is guest curated by Nikesha Breeze.
Nepantla: The Land is the Beloved features a group of artists identifying with the Arab diaspora who live and work in the western United States and are drawn to landscapes that are as dramatic and ancient as those found in their own homelands. These artists, however, complicate traditional representations of the region, acknowledging and resisting its settler-colonial history, thus deepening our understanding of these places. Nepantla: The Land is the Beloved is guest curated by Maymanah Farhat.
The Abiqueños and The Artist examines Indigenous and non-Indigenous understandings of land and landscape in Abiquiú, New Mexico, through a provoking dialogue of works by the notable Diné and Ho-Chunk photographer Russel Albert Daniels and the eminent American artist Georgia O’Keeffe. Avéshu or Abiquiú is a place that American art scholars have consistently referred to as “O’Keeffe Country.” However, this region is the site of ancestral architecture, sacred sites, and important historical events for Genízaro peoples who have lived in this region for centuries, long before O’Keeffe arrived. In this exhibition, these disparate artworks are united to provide depictions of Abiquiú through different perspectives; together they work to convey a deeper understanding of the identities, aesthetics, and the intergenerational ties to Genízaro homelands. The Abiqueños and The Artist is guest curated by Dr. Patricia Marroquin Norby.
Guest Curator biographies:
Lele Barnett is an art advisor and independent curator based in Seattle, Washington. She has curated for Wing Luke Museum, Meta (previously Facebook) Open Arts, Microsoft Art Collection, and Starbucks Art Program. She was a Producer on Emerging Radiance, a recent project that combined art with Spark AR technologies, which won the Tribeca X Immersive Award at the Tribeca Festival New Voices Competition in 2022.
Working from a Global African Diasporic, Afro-Centric and Afro-Futurist perspective, Nikesha Breeze is an artist whose interdisciplinary work reimagines inter-generational traumatic inheritance through the intersection of art and ritual. Nikesha’s work centers Black, Brown, Indigenous, Queer and Earth bodies existing within realms of past, present, and future. Nikesha has shown work both nationally and internationally in museums, galleries, and art fairs across the globe, including a major sculptural installation at the new Freedom Monument Sculpture Park in Montgomery, Alabama.
Maymanah Farhat is an art historian, independent curator, and adjunct lecturer at California State University, Fresno. Her research and scholarship focus on underrepresented artists and forgotten art scenes. She has curated exhibitions at museums, galleries, and art spaces throughout the US and abroad, and has contributed to a wide range of art publications. Her work has been praised by Foreign Policy’s annual list of 100 Leading Global Thinkers and the Arab America Foundation.
Patricia Marroquin Norby, PhD (Purépecha) is the inaugural Associate Curator of Native American Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Her curatorial approach has garnered acclaim from the New York Times, Forbes Magazine, and Hyperallergic. Her forthcoming book, Water, Bones, and Bombs: 20th-Century Art and Environmental Conflicts in Northern New Mexico (University of Nebraska Press) examines art production and environmental issues concerning the American West.

Sport/Romance // Rated R
Tashi, a former tennis prodigy turned coach, turned her husband into a champion. But to overcome a losing streak, he needs to face his ex-best friend and Tashi's ex-boyfriend.
Have you ever met someone who makes their entire personality about a single thing and devotes their entire life to it? And what happens when three of these people who are obsessed with tennis get stuck in a sizzling love triangle? Ladies and gentlemen may I present to you Luca Guadgnino’s Challengers. A dazzling and smoking-hot romance that will turn everyone on.
We follow Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), a former tennis champion who has hit his thirties-slump after a string of injuries and losses. Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), his coach, and his wife sign him up for a minor league Challenger, to boost his confidence. However, emotions and sexual tensions rise as Art’s former best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend, Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) signs up for the competition as well while cosplaying as a starving artist tennis player who is down on his luck.
The final game of the tournament between Art and Patrick serves as a bookend to the film’s narrative. Throughout the film, interwoven flashbacks and flashforwards navigate the intricate web of the characters’ love triangle, akin to the rhythmic volleying of a tennis ball between players. Much like the intensity of a final match in a tennis tournament, Challengers has an unstoppable and frenetic energy, albeit occasionally veering into confusion. You are constantly on the edge of your seat from the pounding and pulsating synthwave/techno score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Sayombhu Mekdeeprom's innovative cinematography pushes boundaries, whether by placing the camera within the tennis ball's perspective or beneath the court, capturing the raw intensity exuded by the talented ensemble cast. From the glistening sweat of Hollywood's finest to the kinetic action on screen, Challengers delivers a visual and emotional experience unlike any other.
While some may find it disappointing that Challengers lacks explicit sexual content, the film compensates with an abundance of erotic tension and a palpable atmosphere that more than suffices. Even innocuous scenes, such as two "best friends" sharing churros in close proximity, exude a homoerotic undercurrent that underscores the intricate power dynamics within the trio. These moments offer a revealing glimpse into the competitive desires driving Art and Patrick's pursuit of Tashi, while she deftly manipulates their affections to serve her own ends. Through these interactions, the film skillfully unravels the complex interplay of ambition and desire that will ultimately shape their destinies. Whether it's Tashi's vicarious living through her husband's tennis career or Patrick's conflicted relationship with his own athletic prowess, Challengers adeptly navigates the intricate psychology of its characters, laying bare their vulnerabilities and motivations with finesse.
Despite their characters' somewhat underdeveloped nature, the ensemble cast delivers performances brimming with fervent intensity. Mike Faist captivates with a physically charged portrayal that evolves from vigor to a melancholic resignation, embodying the struggles of navigating the pitfalls of early thirties ennui. John O'Connor exudes devilish charm as Patrick, skillfully balancing between ineptitude and magnetic unpredictability, keeping audiences on edge with every twist of his character's whims. Zendaya commands attention as Tashi, exuding a commanding presence that borders on intimidating, deftly manipulating her male counterparts to fulfill her desires. The palpable chemistry among the trio ignites the screen, infusing the film with a smoking-hot dynamic that adds an extra layer of intrigue to their complex relationships.
Challengers serve up a riveting and provocative exploration of love, ambition, and rivalry amidst the competitive world of tennis. Director Luca Guadagnino crafts his most accessible and captivating work yet, seamlessly blends provocative themes with sheer entertainment. The film ignites with an irresistible allure, evoking visceral reactions and stirring emotions within viewers. Unapologetically seductive, Challengers basks in its own sensuality, embracing its innate allure with unbridled confidence.

Sci-fi Comedy Drama // PG-13
In 2023, Wes Anderson brought audiences Asteroid City, a sci-fi comedy-drama film he wrote, directed, and produced in collaboration with Roman Coppola. If you’re a fan of Wes Anderson films and you haven’t seen this one yet, it’s worth the watch. Featuring a star-studded ensemble cast including Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Tom Hanks, Jeff Goldblum, Steve Carrell, and others. The film's narrative centers on the events of a Junior Stargazer convention set in a retro-futuristic rendition of 1955. However, it takes a metatextual turn as the making of a play within the convention becomes the subject of a television documentary.
Anderson's homage to the American Southwestern desert's extraterrestrial mythology during the postwar period of the 20th century unfolds in widescreen and stylized color for the play's events, while the television special adopts a black-and-white Academy ratio.
Set in the fictional desert town of Asteroid City, the storyline follows Augie Steenbeck, a war photojournalist, and his children as they navigate personal challenges amid the convention. The encounter with Midge Campbell, a world-weary actress, and her daughter Dinah adds layers to the narrative.
While Asteroid City might not rank among Anderson's most celebrated works like Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums, it retains his trademark dry humor. Anderson revealed that the script's genesis during the COVID-19 pandemic inspired the theme of quarantine faced by the characters.
Teaming up once again with cinematographer Robert Yeoman, Anderson delivers a visually stunning masterpiece. The faux documentary, narrated by Bryan Cranston, adds depth to the storytelling, presenting Asteroid City with cinematic brio.
Anderson's meticulous attention to detail shines through in every aspect of the film's production design, creating a nostalgic yet futuristic world that feels like a true work of art. Humor permeates throughout the film, delivered through Anderson's trademark deadpan dialogue and absurd situations. The characters, portrayed by an ensemble cast featuring Anderson regulars and newcomers alike, are quirky and endearing, each with their own eccentricities and quirks. Historical Drama Miniseries // TV-MA
In the richly layered world of 17th century Japan, Shōgun emerges as a beacon of historical television revival. Set against the backdrop of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu's ascent to power, this series, based on the acclaimed novel, masterfully unfolds the tale of intrigue and ambition.
Set in Japan in the year 1600, Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.
Based upon the acclaimed novel, Shōgun is a historical retelling of Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu's (Yoshi Toranaga) establishing the Tokugawa Shōgunate in early 17th Century Japan from the point of view of an English Pilot named, William Adams (John Blackthorn). Premiering on the small screen in 1980, the series received mass critical acclaim and earned an Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series. Four decades later, it returns, breathing new life into the television with its unparalleled storytelling. Breaking away from the mediocrity that often plagues the streaming industry, Shōgun stands as a monumental historical epic of a real-life struggle over the throne for Japan.
Shōgun unfolds like a meticulously played game of Shogi, where every move, character, and line of dialogue is infused with purpose and significance. This captivating narrative takes viewers on a journey through a power struggle that shapes feudal Japan, weaving together political intrigue and human drama in a rich tapestry of storytelling. From the intricacies of Japanese society to the cunning maneuvers of rival warlords, Shōgun immerses audiences in a world where every scene serves a distinct purpose. Each twist and turn of the plot is carefully crafted, drawing viewers deeper into the heart of the conflict and revealing the complex web of alliances and betrayals that define the era. The dialogue and monologues in Shōgun are masterfully written, brimming with both context and subtext that add layers of depth to the narrative. Like beautiful lines of poetry, they flow seamlessly together, driving the story forward with precision and purpose. At its core, Shōgun captures the essence of one of the most pivotal moments in Japanese history, offering a compelling exploration of power, ambition, and the human spirit. As viewers are drawn into this world of political conspiracy and personal sacrifice, they are treated to a mesmerizing blend of drama, suspense, and historical authenticity that commands the screen from start to finish.
Shōgun derives its true essence from its characters, each intricately woven with layers of complexity and depth, enriching the overarching drama. Among them, Cosmo Jarvis's portrayal of John Blackthorn emerges as a standout performance, deftly navigating the challenges of embodying a character whose natural loudness and clumsiness contrast sharply with the subtleties of his Japanese counterparts. While some may initially interpret Blackthorn's demeanor as a flaw in the performance, Jarvis's deliberate portrayal serves a greater purpose—to underscore the cultural abyss between him and the people of Japan. Through his portrayal, Jarvis adeptly captures the profound culture shock experienced by his character, allowing viewers to witness a compelling transformation from a brash and ambitious Englishman to a man deeply immersed in Japanese customs. It is in these quieter moments that Jarvis truly shines, infusing his character with depth and nuance.
Similarly, Anna Sawai's portrayal of Toda Mariko exemplifies the art of subtle acting. With a mere glance, Sawai effortlessly conveys a myriad of emotions, her thousand-yard stare speaking volumes about her character's inner turmoil and quiet resilience. Her performance is a testament to the power of restraint, as she deftly navigates Mariko's journey of suffering and hope, her emotions simmering beneath the surface until they erupt with raw intensity. Even in moments of despair, Sawai's portrayal radiates a glimmer of hope, underscoring the resilience of the human spirit.
The ensemble cast of Shōgun shines brilliantly, each member delivering performances that leave a lasting impact. From the charismatically charming yet brutal portrayal of Tadanobu Asano as Yabushige to the scheming and cunning rendition of Fumi Nikaido as Ruri, every actor breathes life into their character with skill and precision. Moeka Hoshi's portrayal of the broken yet resilient Fuji, and Takehiro Hira's power-hungry depiction of Ishido, further solidify the ensemble's strength, while Tokuma Nishioka's powerful and wise portrayal of Hiromatsu adds depth to the narrative.
However, it is Hiroyuki Sanada's performance as Yoshii Toranaga that truly stands out, marking a triumphant moment in his career. Despite being typecast and overlooked by Hollywood for years, Sanada seizes the opportunity to showcase his talents as both an actor and a producer in Shōgun. In his portrayal of the powerful and intimidating Toranaga, Sanada commands the screen with a presence, embodying his character's intellect, ambition, and prowess with aplomb. What sets Sanada's performance apart is his ability to infuse Toranaga with an unpredictable nature, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats as they anticipate his next move. With each moment on screen, Sanada captivates audiences with his depth and nuance, delivering what can only be described as his finest performance to date. Finally given a role where he can truly shine, Sanada proves himself to be a force to be reckoned with, cementing his status as one of the industry's most talented actors.
Every aspect of this series is a visual feast. The cinematography is nothing short of breathtaking, capturing the stunning landscapes and rich cultural tapestry of Feudal Japan with remarkable skill. From the intricate costumes to the meticulously crafted production design, every detail is thoughtfully considered, drawing viewers deeper into the immersive world of Shōgun.
But Shōgun is more than just television—it's an immersive journey into one of the most pivotal moments in Japanese history. With its masterful storytelling and captivating characters, the series transcends the screen, offering viewers a profound exploration of the human experience against the backdrop of historical upheaval. In a landscape dominated by formulaic narratives, Shōgun stands as a shining example of the power of the historical epic, reminding us of the importance of stories that not only entertain but also enlighten and inspire.

The Tacoma City Council has passed Amended Ordinance 28962, establishing a temporary moratorium on creating new historic special review and conservation districts in residential areas. This unanimous decision allows for a detailed review of the processes for designating historic districts. District 2 Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh introduced the ordinance, supported by Deputy Mayor John Hines and District 5 Council Member Joe Bushnell.
The moratorium was prompted by concerns from the Planning Commission and the Landmarks Preservation Commission about the effectiveness of the current process. These commissions have suggested a review and possible update during the 2024 Comprehensive Plan update. The moratorium will last one year or end sooner if the review is completed first.

Tacoma will receive $1.3 million in new federal funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Reconnecting Communities Pilot and Neighborhood Access and Equity discretionary grant programs for increased safety and mobility options along Interstate 5 in Tacoma. I-5 is the primary north-south route for vehicle travel in Washington state, and it divides Tacoma, creating barriers to everyday destinations for individuals who do not or cannot drive. This division particularly affects access to downtown Tacoma, the Port of Tacoma, educational institutions, and vital health care facilities.
With these federal funds, the City will hire a consultant to help conduct an 18-month engagement, planning, and design process that will begin in early 2025 and have an estimated completion date in 2026. The Tacoma I-5 Crossings Study will focus on the 6.5-mile corridor of I-5 built in 1959 that bisects Tacoma and includes 14 crossings. The study will develop community-supported solutions that, when implemented, will address the significant safety and accessibility challenges created by I-5 for people walking, biking, and rolling. In addition, this work will help Tacoma take important steps toward environmental justice and continue the City’s work to upend disparities that have harmed people of color in our community. This study is also an implementation action item of the Tacoma Transportation Master Plan and is included in Tacoma’s six-year Transportation Improvement Program.

The City Council voted on Tuesday to adopt a new set of litter and illegal dumping code updates to further protect the health and safety of our neighborhoods. Deputy Mayor John Hines spearheaded the code updates, with co-sponsors Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh and Council Member Joe Bushnell, in response to resident concerns about litter and the need to address the littering of items that can cause damage or injury. The code changes aim to build on the City’s commitment to litter and debris cleanup in the public right-of-way, trail maintenance, business district litter can program, and community outreach and engagement strategies.
“While I have a deep pride in the grittiness of our city,” said Deputy Mayor Hines, “too often that grittiness seems to be related to the amount of litter we see in our streets. Since I joined the City Council, I have heard from countless residents that littering is not just an eyesore, but that it is a public health, public safety, and environmental concern. For that reason, we have taken many steps to address litter in our city, including launching Tidy-Up Tacoma and supporting volunteers who roll up their sleeves and do their part to help keep our city clean. We want our community to feel safe and proud of their neighborhoods, and this change in policy shows that we are committed to ensuring our community takes responsibility for its trash. I am hoping that this code change will signal to our residents that we need their help to make Tacoma a little less gritty, a little more pretty, and to keep it beautiful in the years ahead.”
The code changes include adopting the Washington state definition and penalty for potentially dangerous litter, such as glass, nails, and other items that are likely to injure a person or cause damage to a vehicle or other property. A violation for potentially dangerous litter in any amount will incur a Class 1 civil infraction. In addition, the code changes create a tiered scale for littering violations based on the amount of litter. Doing so removes the current criminal penalty for smaller-scale littering and converts the most egregious and large-scale illegal dumping acts to a gross misdemeanor. Violators will also be required to pay a litter clean-up restitution payment or pick up and remove the litter themselves.
“This update to our municipal code adapts the penalties of litter enforcement to be responsive to the amount and impact of litter people are leaving in our community,” said Council Member Rumbaugh. “It will allow the City to target the large, illegal dumping that most lowers quality of life. I also know it will take our entire community to put an end to littering in order to keep our neighborhoods clean and protect the environment that makes Tacoma a beautiful place to live. Public education has had a tremendous impact on changing behavior to prevent littering, and additional public education, outreach, and community building will be essential to putting an end to litter in Tacoma.”
“Litter impacts everyone in Tacoma. It impacts business, the environment, and how people feel when they’re out in public spaces,” said Council Member Bushnell. “It’s important that we make sure that, while most residents are doing the right thing and keeping Tacoma clean, we’re holding bad actors accountable. Our enforcement tools need to be right-sized for the offenses.”
The City encourages residents to continue reporting litter and illegal dumping through the Tacoma FIRST 311 system. More information is available here.

A decision from an administrative authority within the Vatican has reportedly found in favor of a community group working to save the Tacoma Holy Rosary Catholic Church from the wrecking ball.
Neighbors and longtime parishioners have been battling for five years to stop the church’s demolition and restore it so that the 1920 building can once again serve the community where it has stood for more than a century. In spring 2023, the group – known as Save Tacoma’s Landmark Church – formally appealed to the Vatican’s Dicastery of the Clergy seeking reversal of a decree issued by the Seattle Archdiocese.

Location: 19000 Spirit Lake Hwy, Toutle, WA 98649, United States
Scientists and preparedness experts will be on hand May 18, 2024, at the Science and Learning Center at Coldwater to commemorate the tragic 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. It’s just one of several events taking place between the Washington Emergency Management Division and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Cascades Volcano Observatory in May for Volcano Awareness Month, which includes lectures, watching a movie together and an online question and answer session on Reddit.
The month of May is chosen each year to be Volcano Awareness Month in Washington to commemorate the tragic eruption of Mount St. Helens that killed 57 people, spewing forth 540 million tons of ash and changing our understanding of Washington volcanoes forever.
Typically, the public would be invited to Johnston Ridge Observatory with a great view of the Mount St. Helens lava dome. But the observatory and Highway 504 at Mile Post 45.2 are both closed after a landslide caused catastrophic damage to a nearby bridge. WSDOT says on its construction project website that permanent access will not be restored for public or administrative use at least until the latter part of 2026. And even after that, it will take time for the observatory to re-open.
However, the Science and Learning Center at Coldwater is open with scientists and preparedness experts available to talk about the volcano from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 18, 2024. This facility is located at milepost 43 on State Highway 504. The address is 19000 Spirit Lake Hwy, Toutle, WA.
Can’t make it? You have other ways to participate this month.
Volcano experts will be watching the movie Skyfire and live-posting about the experience on X (Twitter). They’ll start the movie at about 7 p.m., May 8, 2024. Follow @waShakeOut and @USGSVolcanoes. Starring Jason Isaacs, everything goes wrong at a theme park built on a volcano when the danger of the volcano is underestimated — basically, Jurassic Park but with a volcano instead of dinosaurs. Skyfire is available to stream on Prime Free with Ads or to rent on Prime or YouTube. Also, check your local library.
A Reddit Ask-Me-Anything session is slated to go from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., May 16, 2024. A free Reddit account is needed to participate, but not to read the responses. Follow this account to be notified when the session is live.
From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., May 22, 2024, Cascades Volcano Observatory Scientist-in-Charge Jon Major will give a talk about at the Alberta Rose Theatre in Portland. Tickets are required.
Cascades Volcano Observatory has also released a new poster honoring the heritage of Lawetlat’la, the name given to Mount St. Helens by the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and released a new paper looking at the risk management solutions that have been developed over the past 44 years at the volcano.
“May is Volcano Awareness Month, a time we want you to not just look at Mount St. Helens, but remember we have four other active volcanoes in our state – Mount Rainer, Mount Adams, Mount Baker and Glacier Peak,” says Brian Terbush, volcano program preparedness coordinator for the Washington Emergency Management Division. “If there’s a volcano in your backyard, it’s a perfect time to understand how it’s eruption might impact your life and what you can do to prepare for it!”
Cascades Volcano Observatory is not doing a public open house this month but will be planning an event next year (2025) to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Mount St. Helens' eruption. This year, follow USGS Volcanoes social media for daily posts about volcanoes, volcano hazards, eruptions, and preparedness.

It looks pretty, but Mt Rainier is an active volcano and May is Volcano Awareness Month. Now is the time to learn about the mountain, how Pierce County has prepared for it in case it erupts and how you can get ready before the emergency happens.
Mount Rainier is much more than a mountain in the sky. Constructed of hundreds of lava flows, and capped by as much glacier ice as all other Cascade volcanoes combined, Rainier’s steep rubble slopes and abundant water make it prone to landslides and lahars (volcanic mud-flows), especially during eruptions. Lahars are the biggest hazards to the area. Scientists and emergency officials watch and warn.

It can be unpredictable what will go viral online at times. Things are never as black and white as they seem (until now). Z the Zebra has become an unexpected social media sensation after her daring escape from a trailer in North Bend. The female zebra, one of four being transported out of state, made a break for freedom on Sunday afternoon, triggering a search operation in King County.
The incident unfolded near I-90 when the driver pulled over to secure the trailer. Seizing the moment, Z bolted from the trailer, leaving authorities in a race against time to track her down. Despite their efforts, Z has managed to evade capture, captivating the online world with her escapades.
What started as a localized search quickly escalated into a viral sensation as sightings of Z popped up on various social media platforms. Photos and videos capturing escapades have proliferated online, turning Z into an overnight internet star.
Dubbed "zebra marketing" by netizens, the phenomenon has taken the digital realm by storm, with Z's escapades being shared, reposted, and memed across the internet. Businesses and brands have also jumped on the bandwagon, incorporating Z into their marketing posts and campaigns, capitalizing on her unexpected fame. Musician Bob Antone even wrote a song about the wild zebras 24 hours after the event. See below.
Authorities in King County are urging the public to report any sightings of Z as they continue their search efforts. While the runaway zebra's whereabouts remain unknown, her escapades serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of social media and the power of viral phenomena in today's digital age.
As the hunt for Z continues, one thing is certain: in the realm of marketing, forget guerilla tactics—Z the Zebra has ushered in a new era of zebra marketing, captivating audiences worldwide with her elusive charm.
