Tacoma photographer Roxann Murray has an exhibition of eight photographs at the Washington State History Museum titled “Matriarch: Portraits of Indigenous Women in the Pacific Northwest Fighting for our Collective Future.” The exhibition will be on display until May 20, 2024 in the community gallery. The exhibition is free to access during regular museum hours of Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM. A closing reception commemorating Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) Awareness Month will take place on May 16 from 6-8pm. Roxann will give an artist talk and answer patron questions. Masks are highly encouraged to protect Elders and immunocompromised patrons including the artist.
“I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to photograph these women. They are my friends and mentors, and they have taught me about preserving traditions, protecting land and water, caring for community, and celebrating my own Native heritage,” Murray said.
The exhibit includes portraits of eight Indigenous women who are leaders in their communities. The women include Carolyn Christmas (Mi’kmaq), Mariana Harvey (Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation), Sweetwater Nannauck (Tlingit, Tsimshian, Haida), Paige Pettibon (Bitterroot Salish), Nancy Shippentower (Puyallup, Tulalip), Janene Hampton (Snpink’tn, Syilx) Lisa Fruichantie (Seminole Nation of Oklahoma), and Elizabeth Satiacum (Quileute). The women were invited to participate in the project based on their leadership in environmental and social justice movements in their communities.
“Know where you come from. Love who you are; love who your people are. If you step off track, it’s not the end of the world; you can always step back on it.”, Carolyn Christmas said during her photoshoot with Murray.
Murray is a Tacoma-based artist with Nakota and Dakota descendancy and she specializes in community, nature, and travel photography. Her work can be seen at https://atouchofwanderlustphotography.com or on Instagram at @atouchofwanderlust. “Matriarch: Portraits of Indigenous Women in the Pacific Northwest Fighting for our Collective Future” was funded by the Tacoma Arts Commission through the Tacoma Artists Initiative Program.
Tacoma Art Bus will be visiting this exhibit this month as one of it’s stops on the May Art Bus tour.

[image] 3body
By Kimberly Swetland
Science-Fiction Drama | TV-MA for language, violence/gore, nudity | Now Streaming on Netflix
Embark on a mind-bending journey through space and time with Netflix's latest sensation, The Three-Body Problem. Delve into a world where science fiction meets reality, crafted by the masterminds behind 'Game of Thrones.' David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, alongside Alexander Woo, bring to life Liu Cixin's Hugo Award-winning Chinese novel in an enthralling TV series that will leave you craving more.
[image] 3body2
If you’re wondering what else the creators of The Game of Thrones series have been up to, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss partnered with Alexander Woo to create a science fiction tv series, based on the Hugo-Award winning Chinese novel The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin. Liu Cixin is a Chinese computer engineer and science fiction writer. He’s a nine-time winner of China’s Galaxy Award and has also received the 2015 Hugo Award for his novel The Three-Body Problem.
This series/trilogy almost feel like the hit series Lost to me with the lengthy cast of characters you meet and learn about along the way. The character building has Game of Thrones vibes – you even get to meet John Bradley in the role of Jack Rooney (based on the character of Hu Wen). John Bradley, for those who don’t know, played Samwell Tarley in The Game of Thrones TV series. In The Three-Body Problem, Jack Rooney is a member of the “Oxford Five” who is rude and outspoken yet lovable. Jack used his physics degree to develop a snack empire. There isn’t one standout character in this series to me – all give exceptional, believable performances, albeit some longer than others.
To be very honest, when this first landed on Netflix, I skipped past it several times. I don’t think the title really caught my attention, but the trailer had me hooked.
Set in a near-future world facing environmental and technological challenges, the series follows the journey of several characters whose lives become intertwined by a mysterious virtual reality game called "Three Body."
As the game gains popularity, players soon discover that it holds the key to a deeper, darker truth about the universe and humanity's place within it. Among the central characters is Augustine Salazar, a scientist who becomes ensnared in the game's enigmatic puzzles and begins to unravel a conspiracy that spans centuries.
[image] 3body3
As Salazar delves deeper into the secrets of "Three Body," she encounters Ye Wenjie, a reclusive astrophysicist whose past holds crucial clues to the game's origins.
The series masterfully weaves together multiple timelines, alternating between present-day events and historical flashbacks that reveal the origins of the Trisolaran cult and its influence on key moments in human history.
Against the backdrop of political intrigue and scientific discovery, "Three Body Problem" explores profound themes such as the nature of humanity, the ethics of technological advancement, and the consequences of our actions on a global scale. The series poses thought-provoking questions about the limits of knowledge and the potential consequences of seeking answers to the universe's greatest mysteries.
The dialogue rings with authenticity, each word flowing naturally from the characters' lips, drawing you deeper into their world. Scenes possess an immersive quality, expertly crafted to ensnare the audience within the narrative's embrace. Every character is meticulously developed, with their own motivations and flaws, forging genuine connections with viewers as they navigate their tumultuous journeys.
Be warned, though; this series isn't all sunshine and rainbows. If you prefer stories where characters don't face adversity head-on, this might not be your cup of tea. Its episodic intensity brings to mind the likes of Fortitude, a gripping sci-fi drama by Simon Donald, populated by stellar performances from the likes of Dennis Quaid and Stanley Tucci. That show is difficult to find streaming at the moment.
Yet, The Three-Body Problem transcends the confines of a mere sci-fi series—it's an odyssey. Its compelling narrative, dynamic dialogue, and meticulous world-building leave a lasting impression, lingering in the mind long after the final credits roll. Whether you're a die-hard sci-fi enthusiast or simply in search of a riveting tale, I highly recommend it.
It's worth noting, however, that this Netflix adaptation takes creative liberties with Cixin Liu's trilogy, A Remembrance of Earth's History. While the showrunners have been granted the author's blessing for this international adaptation, changes have been made to suit the platform and audience.
What's intriguing is that while this adaptation is hailed as a crown jewel of Chinese sci-fi, it's ironically unavailable in its home country. Despite Netflix's absence in China, dedicated fans have found ways to access the series through VPNs and other means.
Die-hard fans of the trilogy may find themselves grappling with alterations made to beloved characters and plotlines. Spearheaded by the team behind the iconic Game of Thrones, the series relocates much of its action to the United Kingdom, tweaking nationalities and genders along the way. Yet, for all its changes, The Three-Body Problem remains a compelling and engrossing journey into the unknown.
One thing I would also add is to watch this early enough in the evening that you can follow all the details if you haven’t read the books yet. It is very involved, and you will find yourself re-watching scenes or whole episodes if you miss key elements – not that there’s anything wrong with that. I give this 4/5 popcorn buckets for that reason, and also because some audience preferences might not align with this show for various other stated and unstated reasons.

By Elizabeth Mulloy
Action-Comedy | PG-13
A down-and-out stuntman must find the missing star of his ex-girlfriend's blockbuster film.
Throughout the annals of film history, stunt performers have remained a crucial yet often undervalued facet of the cinematic experience. These brave men and women, who risk life and limb to capture those iconic moments on screen, undoubtedly deserve recognition akin to an Oscar. However, it's understandable why the Academy might hesitate to bestow such accolades on stunt work.
Therefore, it was truly gratifying to see David Leitch’s latest movie, The Fall Guy, pay tribute to stunt performers with the reverence they rightfully deserve. Brimming with breathtaking stunts and action sequences that mesmerize on the silver screen, The Fall Guy serves as a fitting platform to highlight the courage and skill of these unsung heroes, set against the backdrop of the filmmaking process itself.
Beyond the thrilling stunts, the movie is buoyed by the performances of its cast. Ryan Gosling’s magnetic charm and impeccable comedic timing carry the movie effortlessly. Emily Blunt is equally as charming and has perfect chemistry with Gosling. However, she felt constrained by her role as she is merely a love interest. Additionally, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Hannah Waddingham are both hysterical with their wild characters.
Despite this praise, I am also frustrated with this movie. While The Fall Guy admirable celebrates stunt performers, its narrative is lazy. Though it has a very simple, standard, action-comedy script, it is littered with plot holes and lacks logical coherence. For example, given the amount of destruction and mayhem that happens in this movie, no one seems to notice. There are no news reports or police presence at any of these events. Massive shootout in Sydney Harbor, Police: crickets, a destructive car chase in Downtown Sydney, Police: crickets, parking illegally by a hotel, Police: Hello There. These issues and many more, litter the entire screenplay. I understand that this is supposed to be a silly movie and not be taken too seriously, but it doesn’t excuse the lazy writing that plagues the script.
[image] fallguy2
Overall, I am happy that The Fall Guy exists, and we need more movies like it. However, I am left deeply conflicted. On one hand, I am glad this movie honors stunt performers with all the respect they deserve, but on the other, they deserve a much better story than what was given here.
At least it brought back the behind-the-scenes footage during the closing credits.

Thanks to everyone who has offered input and support to the charter review process so far!
Overall Update:
● On Thursday, May 2nd, the Charter Review Committee (CRC) completed our final report, a significant milestone in our collective effort to improve local governance.
● On Monday, May 6th, The CRC gave an hour-long presentation to the City Council, briefing the council on our recommended amendments.
● In a study session this afternoon (May 7th), the Council started discussing organizational and agenda ideas for considering each recommendation.
● We are still waiting for a timeline for when the Council will consider each recommendation, but it appears that their consideration period starts today.
Please click on the links above for more information.
You can find the CRC website here.
Click here for a guide to the CRC’s circulated supportive documents, presentation videos, PowerPoint PDFs, and meeting discussion dates arranged by topic.
Policing Accountability Update
● You will find the policing accountability charter recommendation on pg. 22 of the final report.
● Based on today’s study session, the Council may soon invite a special panel to provide them with information on this topic.
● During Monday’s special meeting, the Council asked questions on CBA compliance and the reasoning behind including an Office of Policing Accountability and The Community Oversight Committee for
Policing Accountability in the charter instead of some of the other existing city commissions and committees.
● The News Tribune wrote an article about the policing accountability recommendation.
Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) and Campaign Finance (Public Fundraising) Update
● You will find the RCV charter recommendation on pg. 43, and the campaign finance recommendation on pg. 45 of the final report.
● Based on today’s study session, the Council may group these topics and the initiative and referendum topics together to discussion one day. They have also expressed the need for more information on these topics.
● During Monday’s special meeting, the Council asked questions about the cost of RCV and how the proposed campaign finance section differs from current state law.
● CRC members stressed the importance of creating an election commission to study both topics.
● The News Tribune wrote an article about the CRCs RCV recommendation.
Form of Government (FOG)
● You will find the form of government charter recommendation on pg. 50 of the final report.
● Based on today’s study session, the Council may soon invite a special panel to provide them with information on this topic.
● During Monday’s special meeting, the Council asked clarifying questions about the recommendation.
They also asked what has been accomplished in a Mayor-Council FOG that is hard to accomplish in a Council-Manager FOG.
● The News Tribune wrote an article about the form of government recommendation.
Neighborhood Council (NC) Update
● You will find the Neighborhood Council charter recommendation on pg. 18 of the final report.
● Based on today’s study session, the Council feels they will not need to spend much time on this recommendation. The reason for this is unknown.
● During Monday’s special meeting, the Council asked questions about the reasoning behind including NCs in the charter, as they are non-profit independent entities.
Initiative and Referendum Update
● The final report contains the Referendum recommendation on page 12 and the Initiative recommendation on page 14.
● During today’s study session, the Council asked the City Attorney about WA state’s 90-day timeframe
for referendums. Council Member Rumbaugh was unclear about the connection between the state’s timeline and Tacoma’s. The City Attorney expressed that Tacoma does not need to follow the same timeline. He did not mention that the reason the CRC provided the state's 90-day timeline was to serve as an example to follow and to show the Council that 90 days is not unreasonable. The Council wants the City Attorney to provide examples of what qualifies for a referendum and what does not.
● During Monday’s special meeting, the Council asked questions about what qualifies as a substantially conflicting ordinance.
What Now?
● Now is the time to contact the Mayor and City Council to urge them to put recommendations on the November ballot!
● Also, if you have expertise in any of these areas, now is the time to offer your support to the Mayor and City Council. The Mayor expressed concern about the effort needed for some of the recommendations. Knowing that technical, educational, and outreach resources are available could convince the Council to support some recommendations.
● Stay tuned for opportunities to participate in community action around these topics!

More than 200 San Francisco families likely facing homelessness will be part of a pilot program funded by Google that will guarantee them $1,000 a month to use in any way they wish.
Under the new program, 225 families will be randomly selected to receive $1,000 monthly cash payments for a year, while another 225 families, who represent the control group, will receive $50 a month, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Participants can use this money however they choose.
Called “It All Adds Up”, the program is a five-year study of the impact of guaranteed basic income on a family.
Guaranteed basic income is generally a set amount of money given to someone on a recurring basis that they can use for anything they wish.
The pilot program will be based in San Francisco and operated by San Francisco nonprofits Compass Family Services and Hamilton Families. It will be funded by Google and J-Pal.
According to Alphabet, the company that owns Google, the results of the program will be studied and evaluated by New York University’s Housing Solutions Lab.

News of a gas-line break prompted the Tacoma Fire Department to issue a shelter-in-place alert Wednesday morning.
“Broken gas pipeline in the area. Hazmat team is monitoring air quality. Temporarily shelter in place unless told otherwise,” the alert stated.
Tacoma Fire said on Facebook that the gas leak happened at South 4th Street and L Street at around 8:38 a.m. The incident happened on the construction site of the new Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital.
Puget Sound Energy was notified of the gas leak at 8:30 a.m. after a third-party contractor hit the main pipeline, which caused it to break. PSE crews arrived, and, within an hour and half of the initial call, the damage was repaired. The crew left at 9:50 a.m., according to a PSE spokesman.

It all began during the pandemic when hobby baker Avriel Burlot needed to find something fun to do. What she needed was a sign. Or maybe signs. Business signs. All re-created as cookies and posted to her Instagram account ABC Home Bakery.
"It's like doodling but on a cookie, right? So, I think it's cool to be able to do so much on a cookie." Burlot said.

Nearly 17 hours on the dot and 1,100 miles on the nose, the South Sound community is quite a ways away from the bright lights and shining stars that can only be found on Hollywood Boulevard, or is it? Believe it or not, despite the distance, Tacoma’s South Sound region has become a filming destination in its own right, having rolled out the red carpet numerous times over the decades and found its way onto the big screen thanks to these major motion pictures filmed right here in our backyard!
