Action/Adventure | Rating: R | Now In Theaters
Snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers, young Furiosa falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus. As the years go by, Furiosa soon finds herself in a nonstop battle to make her way home.
In the post-apocalyptic world run by gasoline, bullets, water, and mother’s milk, we return to the mad madworld of Mad Max, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Living up to the hype of its predecessor, George Miller’s masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Road, which was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won six of them, was going to be an impossible expectation. So instead of trying to recreate the lightning in the bottle that was Fury Road, Miller decided to create something different with this prequel, which may or may not work for you. If you go in with the expectation of another Fury Road, then you may find yourself disappointed with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Furiosa is not the non-stop action thriller that its predecessor was. The film takes its time, traveling through the wasteland as we follow Furiosa through the decades, from her tragic kidnapping as a child to the start of Fury Road. Instead of focusing on action spectacles, Miller decides to take a more meditative approach with Furiosa, focusing more heavily on its characters and world-building as they are thrown into a cruel cycle of revenge and madness.
Miller dives into one of his darkest works since Babe, as we witness the cruelty of the world of Mad Max - a world that feeds on desperation that will drive many insane and those who can keep their sanity are straddled between madness and humanity. Furiosa’s desperation is driven by the murder of her mother and the robbing of her childhood as she is thrown into a world where cruelty is the law of the land. Her desperate need for revenge is the only way she can survive. Thus, it avoids the pitfalls of many revenge thrillers while adding an enormous weight to her character in Mad Max: Fury Road. Furiosa: A Max Max Saga, makes Fury Road a better film because of its existence. However, I wished this improvement went both ways.
Even though the themes, the characters, and the world-building are more interesting in Furiosa, this film sadly feels like a technical downgrade compared to Fury Road, which is regarded as one of the greatest action films of all time so attempting to recreate that was going to be an impossible task. And I respect Miller for doing something different in Furiosa, but the action pieces in the film need a lot more polishing. Never once did I feel like Furiosa or any other characters were in danger because of how glaringly obvious the CGI was, while Fury Road found the perfect balance between blending practical and visual/computer effects. In Furiosa it is which scenes are shot in the Australian Outback, and which are on a soundstage. Though all the scenes contained the elements of amazing action sets, the painfully obvious visuals held it back from greatness. Furthermore, the cinematography, editing, and score lacked the kinetic energy of Fury Road. I understand that Furiosa is more of a slow burn, but when the kinetic energy was needed, it was absent. At times, Furiosa felt like an imitation of the Mad Max world, rather than a new addition to it.
With that stated, these technical issues could be overlooked at times because of the performances from Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. Taylor-Joy had massive shoes to fill as she took on Charlize Theron's iconic character, Furiosa, from Fury Road, to which she succeeds. She naturally morphs into her character, making Furiosa her own while honoring Theron’s performance. Taylor-Joy captures the silent, desperate rage of her character. All while knowing when to use her voice to command a scene in the few lines that she has. My only complaint is that she didn’t show up until halfway through the film. She deserved a lot more screen time than she had. However, the biggest standout performance here is Chris Hemsworth’s as Dr. Dementus. His performance in Furiosa was as colorful as it is bizarre as he played this sadistic goofball. He has all the charms of a charismatic leader but is frightening at many moments due to his unpredictability. The layers of trauma and loss Hemsworth adds to his character, makes it grounds for his best performance to date. I hope this is the role that can finally break him out of his MCU role as Thor.
Overall, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is going to come down to expectations. If you are expecting another Fury Road, you are going to be disappointed as this film takes a different approach to the world of Mad Max. It is a slow burn, albeit 15 minutes too long, that is focused on the hostile civilization and the inhabitants of this post-apocalyptic world, rather than the pure, destructive spectacle. But when the destructive spectacle did arrive on the screen it was a technical downgrade that was out of character for this franchise. It is still an entertaining film that is an essential part of the Mad Max Saga, but you can’t help but taste a little sand in your mouth.

Horror/Drama | Not-Rated | Now In Theaters
When a group of teens takes a locket from a collapsed fire tower in the woods, they unwittingly resurrect the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year-old crime.
For all of you sickos out there who love bloody slashers, I have found your latest obsession, In a Violent Nature. Here we follow Johnny (Ryan Barrett) as he goes on a violent rampage in the remote Appalachian wilderness. Even though this movie doesn’t bring anything new to the genre outside of its 3rd person cinematography, it is a fun ride that will make you cheer and squirm.
The kills are brutal, creative, and in some cases funny. These brutal killings are shown through dramatic long takes that will keep you on the edge of your seat in anticipation. The audience in the theater was cheering and moaning during each of these diabolical kills. Because of this theater experience, I had a fun time with this movie. However, if your theater is dead silent or is not vibing with the movie, I have a feeling that you will most likely not enjoy it. In a Violent Nature is definitely a movie that is dependent on your theater experience. So, if you decide to go see it this weekend, please make sure to bring your most squeamish friend. If you don’t like the movie then at least you will have the memory of their reaction, even though your friendship might be over.

By Kimberly Swetland
[img]
Manhattan, NY — On May 30, 2024, former President Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. The jury's unanimous verdict concluded that Trump had falsified records to conceal payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. The prosecution argued that these payments were intended to hide potentially damaging information from voters during the 2016 presidential campaign, thereby elevating the charges to felonies. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, "The trial, which spanned several weeks, included testimony from numerous witnesses and a detailed examination of financial documents.”
This guilty verdict represents a significant legal setback for Trump, who has been facing multiple legal challenges on various fronts. The Brennan Center for Justice released a statement saying that, "Despite this verdict, there is no constitutional barrier preventing a convicted felon from running for or holding the office of president, allowing Trump to continue his 2024 presidential campaign.”
Trump's legal team has announced plans to appeal the decision, which could continue to affect his public and political life substantially. According to the BCJ, "The potential penalties for these convictions include substantial prison time, with the exact sentencing to be determined in subsequent hearings."
Possible Sentences and Legal Expert Predictions
Each count of falsifying business records carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison. The BCJ said that "If sentenced consecutively, Trump could face up to 136 years in prison. However, it is also possible that the sentences could be served concurrently, resulting in a shorter overall prison term.”
While the judge has the discretion to impose a more lenient sentence, such as probation with no jail time, fines, and community service, "this is considered unlikely in this high-profile case. Legal experts predict that Trump, given his resources and lack of prior criminal history, is less likely to receive the maximum sentence. The judge's assessment of mitigating factors, including Trump's status and the political implications, will be crucial in the final sentencing decision.”
The most likely scenario is a sentence involving a reduced prison term—potentially several months to a few years—served concurrently for multiple counts, along with probation, fines, and possibly community service. "The exact sentence will depend on the judge's final decision and any successful appeals or legal motions filed by Trump's defense team.”
