This weekend nobody would blame you for getting a case of FOMO. Tacoma plays host to Porchfest, Art on the Ave Festival and  Reggae on the Way. All of which are top notch entertainment options for lovers of music and art. We really only have a few weekends per summer that we can have confidence in the sunshine so we tend to pile a lot into late July and early August. Tacoma Porchfest, a unique and walkable music festival where front porches become stages, happens on Saturday, July 20, from 1-6 p.m. Hosted by the Tacoma Central Neighborhood Council and funded by the Tacoma Arts & Cultural Vitality Division and Tacoma Venues & Events, this year’s festival is twice the size of previous years. The event has grown exponentially, with 200 bands participating, up from 100 last year and 50 the year before.

The festival will feature a wide variety of musical genres, from Dixieland jazz to opera to doom metal, as well as poetry, stand-up comedy, and two open-mic porches for attendees to showcase their talents. Community engagement is at the heart of Porchfest, with partnerships including the Sixth Avenue Business District and various city and local nonprofits. “Kid’s Street” on South State Street will offer family-friendly activities, while performances will take place across 60 porches, including front yards, community gardens, and business parking lots.

Stretching across six blocks by twelve blocks, from 6th Avenue to South 12th Street and Sprague Avenue to Cedar Street, the festival promises a vibrant and chaotic celebration of local talent.

Highlights include a parade featuring the Tacoma Scots Pipe Band, Olympia’s Sticks & Bones, and Tacomarama. With such a diverse lineup and extensive community involvement, Tacoma Porchfest is set to be an unforgettable afternoon of music and fun.

What is most lovely about this event is how non-commercial, inclusive and wholesome the whole thing is.

ART ON THE AVE

Tacoma's largest free art festival 6th Avenue Art on the Ave is happening this Sunday July 21st from noon to 7 pm. Within a 10-block area there will be approximately 250 vendors, 5 stages and 3 other performance areas (Velta la Luna circus, a Bollywood exhibit and a roller-skating performance area) on 6th Ave between Alder and State Street. There will even be some dancing horses this year!

REGGAE ON THE WAY

Reggae on the Way on Sunday July 21st is bringing the heart and soul of world music to Tacoma, Washington. This annual reggae-inspired festival showcases a rich tapestry of reggae genres, from roots to dancehall, Hawaiian, and American reggae.

More than just a music festival, Reggae on the Way unites a community with a love for reggae's rhythmic beats and positive vibes. The festival invites music lovers to experience live performances by acclaimed international and local artists, including ARISE ROOTS, Atmosphere, Common Kings, Fia, Fortunate Youth, Kanaka Fyah, and Shaggy.

The festival celebrates the universal message of peace, love, and unity that reggae music brings to the world.

This year at Art on the Ave 2024 we are proud to showcase our 2nd Juried Art Show. We are working with “Ingenuity of the Arts”, the theme for this year’s Art on the Ave. It’s hard to be novel in our fast paced world where something may already seem to be done before. We asked artists to challenge that and produce work they feel comes from a place of being clever, working with something original to themselves and overall inventive. Our Jury panel will include Christina Bertucchi, art department chair at Charles Wright and Barbara Bleich, Professional Artist from Gig Harbor.

Discover the iconic Tacoma Museum of Glass where you can admire the stunning cone architecture and Chihuly pieces plus witness glass artisans at work.

The first thing you’ll notice about Tacoma’s Museum of Glass is the ginormous cone rising ninety feet in the air like a futuristic smokestack. Its tilted, stainless steel shingles glisten. The cone was designed by internationally known architect Arthur Erickson. He was inspired by the sawdust burners that once dotted this region of Washington State.

In addition, it contains a glass-blowing studio where visitors can observe glass artisans at work. The cone is regarded as a symbol of Tacoma’s transformation from an industrial center to a cultural mecca.

The Original Brown's Point Salmon Bake, scheduled for August 3-4, 2024, is calling for additional artists to join the event. According to a recent social media post, the event aims to promote new and local art by keeping vendor fees low or even free. Vendors can keep 100% of their profits.

Artists interested in participating in the night market will be positioned closest to the beer garden. The event also features a kids' market and a free craft table, with tables provided for children and teens to sell handmade items. All children and teen vendors can participate for free. Registration is required.

The event organizers are also looking for hands-on craft experiences, which they will promote on their Facebook page.

The Original Browns Point Salmon Bake is a cherished summertime event where visitors can enjoy fresh-caught Alaskan salmon cooked over alder wood fire pits, as well as burgers, clam chowder, and milkshakes. The event runs from noon to 8 pm both days, with the beer garden staying open late on Saturday. Families can enjoy live entertainment, kids' games, crafts, and an art show featuring local Northwest artists. There is no entry fee, making it a fun and accessible Northwest tradition for all.

IN THE SPIRIT Arts Market & Northwest Native Festival returns on August 10, 2024! This free event celebrates Native arts and culture with an artisan vendor market, exhibitions, performing arts, family activities, and free admission to the Washington State History Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, and Museum of Glass.

This year's highlights include the Indigenous Fashion Show by MEKA at the Tacoma Art Museum led by MEKA, glass art demonstrations by Raven Skyriver at the Museum of Glass, and performances by The Alaska Kuteeyaa Dancers, Rona Yellow Robe, Rena Priest, Arianne True, and LOZEN at the Washington State History Museum.
