It’s a few minutes before 3 pm and my kiddo and I are trying to find parking at the Mottet Library. I read about this event a little while back and put it on my calendar because it sounded fun. We walk into the library and see Leigh Urbaniak and Mara Aveline standing around a large table sorting plastic sheets and preparing for the groups of people that would soon be filling the space.

After signing in Leigh gives us a tutorial on how to make our cards, she’s smiling and it’s easy to see how much she loves remaking. She holds up the sample she just demonstrated making and it’s got hearts and bright colors. She sets it down on the table so everyone can see it.

As we are finishing up our cards over a dozen people are now standing over their projects or sifting through bits and pieces of plastic attempting to find the perfect components for their design. Mara and Leigh have expanded to another large table across the aisle just to ensure there is space for everyone to work.

We wait patiently by the sewing machine for one of the other attendees to finish sewing her project together and it doesn’t look like a card. To Leigh's delight, the woman has used her fused plastic sheet to sew together a cellphone case.

Everywhere you look the Remakery is inspiring people. “I loved it.” said Mic, an attendee, “It’s a super clever use of materials and you can make a lot more than cards.” Mic isn’t alone in the love of the Remakery Tacoma. Another attendee, Gina, went to last night's felt event and was hooked. “I learned something new I can share with other people and get other people involved with.”

Leigh tells me they are currently able to put on all these events due to a grant and they are reusing everything they can get their hands on. She is positioning the card on the sewing machine they brought along so the stitch is right on the fold. Once done she admires the card and asks to take a photo of it before moving on to help the next card maker.

Mara Aveline is one of several volunteers for Remakery Tacoma, a 501c3 non-profit, who help Leigh out at events. She’s excited to show some of the items remade from plastic that would have otherwise just ended up in the trash. The bright rectangular, marbled flat plastic piece she shows me first is a loom! Yep, a loom that you can weave on. It’s about the size of your hand.

The next piece Mara shows is a round hockey puck-looking item with swirls that make you think of candy. “It’s a darning tool, used for mending.” These little handy mending helpers are made from lids that can’t be recycled, only thrown away. Quite a clever reuse of existing materials to preserve another item by mending it. Mending, if you aren’t aware yet, is the process used to repair clothing or other textiles.

Mara is joyfully showing and helping people of all ages and skill levels work through their projects and moving around to ensure everything is going smoothly. “It’s fun.” My daughter says as she admires her card.

If you are interested in remaking and want to find out about an upcoming event check out their website at https://www.remakerytacoma.org/ . You can see more information on events, how you can get involved, and what items Leigh and company are looking for to sustain their Remakery efforts.

Last week, neighbors in South Tacoma rallied to save a mature and majestic western redcedar tree 🌲. It was damaged by some construction work and the property owners were considering removal. After receiving a positive tree health assessment and seeing the response from neighbors, they agreed to leave it standing!

Smiles are everywhere at this incredible collaborative event of community members and agency as Lisa Mathusz, a recent recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Community Lifetime Service Award, stands on the stage beaming out at the audience. This important and long-standing event for the Vietnamese community in East Tacoma celebrates the coming of a new year and the impending arrival of spring. Lisa has been helping organize one yearly in the area for over a decade, along with many other events throughout the year.

Previously this treasured event by Golden Bamboo Senior Group (Lisa’s group), Chùa Phước Huệ Buddhist Temple, Hoi Phu Nu Trung Vuong Tacoma, and Pierce Conservation District had been held at locations like Salishan’s Family Investment Center (FIC). It seems more fitting that this celebration be held at the Eastside Community Center to showcase a cultural celebration of the Vietnamese within East Tacoma.

A rousing performance of the American and Vietnamese National anthems was preceded by Lincoln High School’s JROTC Color Guard. Dancing was a major feature of this cultural extravaganza with performances by Golden Bamboo, Sunflowers, Phuroc Hue, and Kaimiola Phoaynes Dance Troupes. Dancing wasn’t the only thing that made it a fun event to be at, spectators were treated to a Dragon dance in honor of the Year of the Dragon and an incredible karate display by Vovinam Karate. There was also a rare and wonderful treat of a classical Vietnamese play with beautiful and elaborate costumes, with the troupe performing as Kitchen Gods. Ancestors were honored with incense and offerings and children were invited onstage to receive lucky money. Attendees were treated with food brought to them in their seats as they enjoyed the performances.

This particular yearly festival never disappoints and is one you should not miss. Hopefully, it will continue to be hosted by Metroparks at the Eastside Community Center for many years to come!

  • According to Coinweek and Blanchard & Co, some extremely rare, valuable dimes could be worth up to nearly $2 million.

This specific dime is known as the 1894-S Barber Dime. Rumor has it that the superintendent of the San Francisco Mint, John Daggett, had 24 of these dimes minted in 1894. Daggett gave three of them to his young daughter, telling her to save the coins until she was older. However, no sooner had he given this advice than she immediately used one of the dimes to fund an ice cream treat. Today, nine 1894-S Barber Dimes still exist. And while most are accounted for, two of them are believed to still be floating around in American pockets.

So what do you do if you think you have one of the rare coins? LEARN MORE

Working Families: Claim Your Free Tax Credit!

Two Tacoma area organizations, Collaborative Partners Initiative (CPIN) and The RISE Center have teamed up to promote a Washington State Tax Credit so working families can get money back on the taxes they’ve already paid. Free tax filing and informational are hosted across the South Sound.

What is the Working Families Tax Credit Program? This is a new program from Washington State that supports low to moderate income families by returning a portion of sales tax to them. If a family typically qualifies for the Earned Income Tax Credit, they will qualify for the Working Families Tax Credit. The maximum credit ranges from $315-$1255 depending on the number of qualifying children.

What we are doing: We are helping people get money in their pocket and maximize their tax return. As community grantee partners, CPIN and RISE are getting the word out to people in Pierce, Thurston, and Lewis Counties by hosting informational workshops about this tax credit and providing free tax filing help for individuals/families that qualify.

Who is eligible for this tax credit program? Individuals and families are eligible for the Working Families Tax Credit if they meet the following requirements:

    • Have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Need an ITIN, we can help you file this

Lived in Washington a minimum of 183 days in 2023 (over half the year).

    • Are at least 25 and under 65 years of age OR have a qualifying child in 2023.

Filed a 2023 federal tax return.

    • Meet income requirements.

    • Eligible to claim the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) on their 2023 tax return (or would meet the requirements for EITC but are filing with an ITIN).

Sign up for virtual tax help or for one of our upcoming tax help workshops so we can help you maximize your refund:

Centralia Tax Help Workshop 1pm-5pm, Saturday, February 3 at Centralia Library, 110 S. Silver Street, Centralia 98531

Health & Wellness:

Spring seems far off for so many, but some of us are seeing these warmer winter days and already dreaming of gardens teeming with fruits and veggies. We spring dreamers have perused our seed catalogs, planned our layouts, ordered our seeds, made sure our bulbs are tucked in tightly with mulch and are keeping an eye on our fruit trees for winter damage. That was last month…

This month is the time to focus on preparation. Winter is the time to do all those maintenance tasks that ensure your equipment is working great come spring. Have you sharpened your tools lately? No? That can make digging such a dull experience! 😊 Your bypass hand clippers that helped you fight back the creeping and bounding blackberry vines need a little love, too. Sharpen them for a fighting chance. Replace all those handles that need fixing and make sure you have all the tools you need to do the job. My favorite tool is a handheld dirt axe and frequent use means a lot of wear, so maintenance is key.

So that you can find what you need when you need it you should organize your tools and storage. Planning your storage can be just as important as your garden layout.

Another important task is training your grape vines, pruning your berry bushes, and smothering those weeds. Raspberries only grow on 2nd year canes so don’t trim back too far or you’ll impact berry production. For blueberry bushes, you’ll trim small branches that cross over and touch other branches. The idea is to shape the bush into what size you need for your space. Touch up your bed with more mulch and trim back your wandering grape vines.

If you have peach trees you might consider doing a leaf curl treatment on a day that reaches at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Our wet weather means more frequent treatments for this persistent problem, and you’ll want to treat your peach or nectarine trees at least one additional time before they bud.

Towards the end of this month and at the beginning of March you’ll want to start your brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, brussels sprouts, and cabbage) INDOORS. This will help you get a start on your garden when it comes time for outside planting. Starting seeds indoors requires good lighting, good dirt, and careful watering. Mold and insects can destroy your seedlings and poor lighting makes them spindly (long and thin).

And always focus on your dirt! You’ll hear a lot about dirt from me because it’s your foundation and this is a good time to put natural fertilizers like AGED chicken manure into your soil. The fertilizer should be turned (take a shovel and flip it) into the soil and in cases where you use fresh manure, it is always good to wait a minimum of three months to plant in it or to age the manure in a compost heap for at least three months before application. There are bagged aged manure products available but, this can be quite expensive over large areas. If you raise rabbits or chickens, you are hopefully using their waste in a compost bin to make your dirt. This means you have a ready supply on hand. Another source of manure is local farmers who are usually happy to be rid of their daily growing supply of fertilizers. Bottom line: A good application of healthy mulches and fertilizers will have your garden ready for spring.

Lastly, make sure you have all your cold frames built for upcoming early outdoor planting. This will save your hard work from being burned by the frost.

    Hope you enjoyed the read!

  • Money isn’t a sometimes relationship. It’s a marriage.

Through thick and thin - til death do us part.

You can’t just be available when things are good. You've gotta face the hard stuff together.

Naturally, we love money when it’s flowing in but not so much when we’re in the red.

But here’s the thing… Debt, taxes, and bills are still forms of money.

If I look at them negatively, I’m looking at money negatively.

This creates a feeling in me that compounds the longer I’m in this state of being. The energy I exude here is not attractive to money as a cranky, unappreciative person is not attractive to their partner.

This way of thinking may have you scratching your head. I invite you to sit with it. Contemplate. Think about the times in your life when you attracted money. What kind of energy were you in? How were you feeling? What was the circumstance?

Now, don’t go beating yourself up for being a crappy partner in your financial relationship. Most of us weren’t taught to look at money in healthy ways. Let alone learning to create feelings of abundance when money was tight.

Our parents and grandparents taught us how to view money by the way they spoke of it and demonstrated its use.

It’s no wonder many of us walk through life today in fear, scarcity mindset and funky feels around money. This very conversation might be bringing forth a lot of discomfort. That is perfectly okay and actually good. Take it as a sign of change. You get to draw a line in the sand today.

Let’s talk about how to reframe the parts of money that feel heavy.

    Acknowledge your past choices.

Do you have a lot of credit card debt? What did you buy with it?

Did you enjoy the things? Experience? Giving?

Buying something on time isn’t bad. Sure, you are paying more with the interest, but you were able to do something you wanted to do, yes? Factor the interest into the actual price and decide it was a valuable purchase. If you feel it wasn’t, forgive yourself and move on. You get to make better choices today. The past can stay there.

Many of us squirm in our seats when taxes come due.

If you owe taxes, it means you made money. This statement is Captain Obvious but isn’t it interesting how our minds may automatically venture into a void of negativity and dysfunction around this simple concept?

We live in a world where the government gets a share to do things that they deem necessary. You can either keep being mad about it or decide it’s part of your ability to make money.

And then there are the bills.

Can you shift your perspective into pure appreciation for a home, car, utilities, health insurance, classes, phone, etc.? Next time you’re at the market paying for food, allow your heart to fill with gratitude. As you part with your earnings to cover life’s expenses, practice sending it out with joy, acknowledging what you have in return.

It takes time and dedication to shift the money mindset that has been long engrained. Embrace new perspectives. Take control of your thoughts. Master them.

Allow new feelings of good fortune and gratitude act as powerful magnets signaling to the universe that you are ready to receive more of what you desire.

Become an energetic match for a positive money marriage.
