Here is Where to Find the Best Soups around Town
By JACKIE FENDER
As soon as the first fall leaf flutters to the ground I know it’s my favorite time of year. It’s soup season and we’re well into it!
Soup is like magic really. You mix a little of this, and a little of that, a sprinkle of seasoning and a dash of love. Allow your cauldron, er...pot to simmer and bubble until aromatic and bam, you have a nourishing concoction to cozy up to. It’s like soul food, soup warms you to your core.
Better yet, there’s a soup for everyone from the creamy and decadent to the brothy or even a stew. Here are just a few spots to get a cup or bowl of a little something special this season if you’re just not feeling up to making your own.
If you’ve been around the South Sound long enough and are a long-time soup lover, you know that Chef Bill Trudnowski of the Adriatic at Oakbrook whips up a famous Creamy Mushroom Soup. It even says so on the menu! If you prefer a little pep in your step, they also serve up a Spicy Sausage and Lentil Soup. 8102 Zircon Dr. SW, Lakewood.
Poquitos Tacoma may be best known for its tacos, guac and margaritas but don’t sleep on the soup. Their current menu includes Caldo de Res, a traditional soup loaded with beef shank, corn, carrots, potatoes, onions and cilantro with warm corn tortillas to serve as a vehicle from bowl to mouth. 649 Division Ave., Tacoma.
You can’t even utter the words “soup” and “Tacoma” in the same sentence and not include Infinite Soups in the same breath! Every day (but Sunday) you can swing by for a variety of piping hot, delectable concoctions that will leave your belly feeling like it’s been hugged from the inside. Rotating menu options include “Creamy,” “Vegan,” “Non-Creamy,” and “Vegetarian” and a wide range of flavors from the more traditional to adventurous spoonfuls. 445 Tacoma Ave. S., Tacoma.
Happy Belly isn’t just a vibe, it’s an amazing lunch spot that boasts a variety of delicious eats from fresh juices, smoothies and sweet and savory treats which includes soup. A personal favorite and oft recommended to friends is their Red Pepper Kale Soup. It’s vegan but hearty with a nice little heat that builds. It’s one of those that leaves you feeling healed and comforted all at once. 1122 Market St., Tacoma.
Doyle’s Public House hits ya with a one two combo that oozes of nostalgia and cheese! They pair Dubliner, Swiss and Cheddar on sourdough for an ooey-gooey sammie served up with a mouthwatering Tomato Bisque. This isn’t the same pairing from childhood and has evolved with your grown-up taste buds. Hot tip: Jacob’s Creamy Mushroom Bistro Soup on Thursdays isn’t a bad way to be either. 208 St. Helens Ave., Tacoma.
Rosewood Cafe has been long admired for many reasons, but their Beer Cheese Soup makes the top three list for sure. Trust us. This one doesn’t say “famous” on the menu, but it’s known far and wide. Be warned, it’s only available on Wednesdays. 3323 N. 26th St., Tacoma.
