BY MATT STEVENS for WEEKLY VOLCANO 5/8/26 |
For this week’s review, we took a long hike down at Capitol Forest, just southwest of Olympia, so we could build up our thirst. It was the first hot day of the year, out on a gorgeous hike of waterfalls and butterflies. On the way back, we stopped by Three Magnets Brewing in Olympia.
I was so excited to see a saison on tap when I walked in. As I’ve said in the past, saisons are one of my favorite styles of beer, and after a long hike on a hot day, it can be shockingly refreshing. A saison is a light-bodied, often dry, fruity beer, usually around 5 percent alcohol.
Three Magnets serves their beers in mason jar glasses, which don’t always show off the appearance of the beer, but the Liquid Landscapes Saison came out straw-colored and slightly cloudy, right on style. Looks great.
On the nose, the weird phenolics are very present, and the complexity of the yeast comes through. This beer smells fun. Hints of citrus and black pepper.
The beer absolutely nails the profile of a saison. It’s extremely dry and crisp. There are hints of black pepper and yeast phenols. The citrus is also there, but quite subdued.
Mouthwise, this beer really shines. Because it’s so dry and has those complex flavors, it just keeps unleashing different levels of complexity. The black pepper really shines as we keep going through it.
Overall, this beer is fantastic. Three Magnets has a great taproom and a big outdoor patio. They usually have food trucks serving, or you can do as we did and bring in your own snacks to the taproom. When we were there, there was a great-smelling barbecue truck, but we didn’t splurge for the pulled pork.
So, get yourself on a hike and stop by Three Magnets to enjoy a beer. Three Magnets is also available in cans at Peaks and Pints, Pint Defiance, and Metropolitan Market, and often on tap at the Red Hot, Peaks and Pints, or the Parkway.
