BY JACK CAMERON for WEEKLY VOLCANO | 7/10/2026
It’s beginning to seem a lot like Pride Month here in Tacoma at our local independent cinemas. You’ve got not one but two chances to check out drag performers. There’s a documentary about a nonbinary Indigenous person. And not one but two classic movies from the 1990s. There’s even a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Of course, that’s not all they have to offer. Here’s what’s playing this week.
The Grand Cinema, 606 Fawcett Avenue
She’s the He, unrated: Thu 07/09 2:15 p.m., 4:45 p.m., Fri 07/10 1:50 p.m., 5:30 p.m., Sat 07/11 2:10 p.m., 6:00 p.m., Sun 07/12 11:45 a.m., 3:45 p.m., 7:30 p.m., Mon 07/13 1:15 p.m., 5:15 p.m., Tue 07/14 7:30 p.m., Wed 07/15 3:15 p.m.
She’s the He is an unrated film created almost entirely by trans and nonbinary individuals. It’s a comedy about Ethan (Misha Osherovich) and Alex (Nico Carney), who pose as trans women in an attempt to quell gay rumors about them. But things don’t quite go as planned.
Disclosure Day: Thu 07/09 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., Fri 07/10 11:20 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 4:40 p.m., Sat 07/11 11:20 a.m., 4:45 p.m., 7:30 p.m., Sun 07/12 11:20 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 4:40 p.m., 7:20 p.m., Mon 07/13 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., Tue 07/14 1:15 p.m., 4:00 p.m., Wed 07/15 1:15 p.m., 4:15 p.m.
Steven Spielberg’s latest alien epic is a fast-paced, old-school action movie well worth seeing on the big screen. It’s been a few weeks, but I expect this one will last another week or two. That said, there’s no reason to wait.
Project Hail Mary: Sat 07/11 2:00 p.m.
The Ryan Gosling space epic about an astronaut and an alien trying to reboot the sun has a Saturday matinee showing, just like last Saturday. Will it return next Saturday?
The Invite: Fri 07/10 11:50 a.m., 2:20 p.m., 4:20 p.m., 7:45 p.m., Sat 07/11 11:45 a.m., 2:20 p.m., 5:10 p.m., 7:45 p.m., Sun 07/12 11:30 a.m., 2:20 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 7:45 p.m., Mon 07/13 1:45 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 6:45 p.m., Tue 07/14 2:00 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 7:15 p.m., Wed 07/15 2:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 7:20 p.m.
Olivia Wilde’s latest comedy stars Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton as two couples having dinner that turns into something unexpected. With a cast like this, I expect this one will be all sorts of naughty fun.
Erupcja: Fri 07/10 12:00 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 7:30 p.m., Sat 07/11 12:20 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 8:00 p.m., Sun 07/12 1:50 p.m., 5:45 p.m., Mon 07/13 3:15 p.m., 7:15 p.m., Tue 07/14 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m., Wed 07/15 1:30 p.m., 5:15 p.m.
A couple goes to Poland on a romantic trip that goes awry when a nearby volcano erupts. Stuck in Poland, one of them encounters an old and unpredictable friend. Director Pete Ohs wanted to film in Poland after moving there in 2023. Take a trip to Poland for a couple of hours at the Grand.
Being Thunder, Sovereign Cinema
Friday, July 10, at 7:00 p.m.
Sovereign Cinema presents the 2021 documentary Being Thunder. Sherente Harris, a Two-Spirit, genderqueer teenager from the Narragansett Tribe in Rhode Island, challenges old binary gender roles and explores what it means to be a queer Indigenous person in the modern world. This special screening will have an in-theater preshow from Cherri Bepsi, a local drag performer. After the screening, there will be a gathering over refreshments, community art, and resource sharing.
Once Upon a Time in a Cinema: Fri 07/10 11:40 a.m., 2:10 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 7:15 p.m., Sat 07/11 12:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 7:10 p.m., Sun 07/12 12:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m., Mon 07/13 2:00 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 7:00 p.m., Tue 07/14 1:25 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m., Wed 07/15 1:45 p.m., 4:45 p.m., 7:30 p.m.
Once Upon a Time in a Cinema tells the chaotic and cathartic tale of one particular Friday night at a packed Irish cinema where the owner has an unforgettable night. Told in real time, with the Richard Gere movie Breathless playing in the theater within the film throughout, this is a unique film with an original perspective.
Tuesday Film Series: The Last Picture Shows
Tuesday, July 14, at 1:45 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
The Grand’s Tuesday Film Series continues with The Last Picture Shows. Filmmaker Rustin Thompson traveled around the country visiting 123 theaters, reflecting on movie theaters, what they meant, and what they mean now. Movie theaters are dying. This film takes a look at theaters like the Grand that keep the community activity of watching movies together alive.
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, Craft Night
Wednesday, July 15, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are going fast.
This month’s Craft Night at the Grand is a classic. 1995’s To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar has a couple of Hollywood’s toughest action stars dressing up in drag. Patrick Swayze got his role by doing a 30-minute monologue about being bullied in Texas when he took ballet. His costar Wesley Snipes gets to show off some of his comedy chops. As mentioned, this is a Craft Night, so the lights will stay on while you work on your crafts and watch the movie. Tickets are going fast for this one.
The Blue Mouse Theatre, 2611 North Proctor Street
The Birdcage
Thu 07/09 8:00 p.m.
In time for Pride and the movie’s 30th anniversary, the Blue Mouse is playing the Nathan Lane and Robin Williams comedy classic The Birdcage. Robin Williams was originally cast to play Albert, but having already explored being overly flamboyant and dressing in drag in other movies, Williams wanted to play the other role. Watch for when Robin falls in the shrimp scene. It’s a real fall. Five dollars of every ticket goes toward the Rainbow Center.
Minions & Monsters
Fri 07/10-Sun 07/12 4:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Mon 07/13 7:00 p.m. (last show)
Minions & Monsters has taken over the Blue Mouse. This latest Minions movie adds new monsters and other creatures to the franchise’s growing pantheon of characters. And this Saturday, you can see where it all began.
Free Family Movie: Despicable Me
Sat 07/11 11:00 a.m.
The Free Family Movie this month is Despicable Me, the movie that launched a thousand sequels. OK, not that many just yet, but still, it’s the one that started it all. And now the Minions are everywhere.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Sat 07/11 11:30 p.m.
And Saturday night is this month’s screening of the musical classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Participation, dressing up, and having a good time aren’t required, but they’re highly suggested. If you’ve never witnessed The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the theater, it is something everyone should do at least once in their life.
As usual, our independent theaters give Tacoma a wide variety of movies to pick from. Enjoy.
Next week: Moana comes to the Blue Mouse, and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey finally arrives.
