Scott McGee Embraces an Unconventional Artistic Journey

BY MERRICK PARNELL for WEEKLY VOLCANO | 11/6/2026

This week we checked in on local artist Scott McGee for a five-question feature  in support of his upcoming appearance at Arts at the Armory.

Weekly Volcano: How did you get started as an artist, and how has your artistic style and journey evolved over the years?

Scott McGee: I’ve always drawn. It’s how I managed boredom before the internet and before smartphones. I feel like being an artist is what’s happened to me rather than a goal I’ve pursued, and I’ve come to embrace it.

WV: What inspires your artwork, and can you share a little about your creative process?

SM: I’m obsessed with the human face. Currently, I’m exploring how to deconstruct its planes and shapes into bold, graphic, highcontrast forms that offer alternate aesthetics.

WV: What do you remember most about being a member of Speakeasy Arts Cooperative back in 2010 when it was voted as one of the Top 5 Art Galleries in Western Washington by KING5 viewers, and how did that experience shape you as an artist?

SM: Not much. I have a terrible memory. Probably mostly networking with other local artists.

WV: What will you be showcasing at Arts at the Armory, and what are you most looking forward to about participating?

SM: I’ll be bringing tons of prints of my antifascist crows and images from my archives, along with some unique, one-off original wearable figure drawing clothing. I will also have a portrait piece in the group portrait show. I’m looking forward to hanging out with other working artists, meeting new, interesting patrons, and hopefully making rent.

WV: Outside of art, what other hobbies or talents do you enjoy? What are some goals or projects you’re excited about for the future?

SM: Mostly just hanging out at the dog park with my awesome dog. For the future, I’m rewatching T2 and taking notes for an armed resistance against AI data centers …
