Movies of the Week Now Playing in Tacoma

BY JACK CAMERON for WEEKLY VOLCANO 4/3/26 |

Having finished their run of Project Hail Mary, the Blue Mouse Theater now has the Super Mario Galaxy movie. This sequel to the Super Mario Bros. movie from 2023 (not to be confused with the 1993 live-action movie) takes Mario and Luigi on an all-new adventure based on the Super Mario Galaxy video games.

Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy reprise their roles as Mario and Princess Peach. Others are back as well. Given how popular the Super Mario Bros. movie was, it’s no surprise they came out with a sequel. With screenwriter Matthew Fogel having written both movies, you can expect more fun, excitement, and adventure with the Super Mario Galaxy movie.

On April 9 at 6:00 p.m., the Blue Mouse will have a special showing of the 2026 Fly Fishing Film Tour. This is their 20th year. Tickets are $25.

The Grand Cinema, Tacoma’s other independent theater, begins its run of The Drama. This is the highly anticipated film starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as an engaged young couple with a dark secret that threatens to destroy everything.

The Drama is getting a lot of buzz, both for the performances and the subject matter. I can’t get into it without talking about spoilers. So instead, I’ll just say the movie centers around two couples talking about the worst things they’ve ever done, and one of them is significantly worse than the rest.

For a complete shift in gears, the Grand also has a movie called Dead Lover. This disturbing horror movie about a woman who falls in love with a man who drowns and goes to extreme lengths to bring him back was called an “affront to God” by The Onion AV Club.

And on Friday and Saturday nights, Dead Lover is playing in STINK-O-VISION, a unique scratch-and-sniff moviegoing experience.

Both The Drama and Dead Lover start April 3.

The Grand is getting into Easter with an Easter egg search at the Grand, April 3–5. On Easter Sunday, April 5, at 6:00 p.m., there is a special showing of the cult classic Donnie Darko, which, if you haven’t seen it on the big screen, is a wonderful surreal experience.

But for my money, the best thing showing on any screen next week is on Tuesday, April 7, at 7:20 p.m., when they put on Hundreds of Beavers. If you’ve never seen or heard of this movie, I’m not surprised, but it was reviewer Chris Stuckmann’s favorite movie of 2024 and might be mine as well.

Hundreds of Beavers follows an applejack salesman who tries his hand at fur trading, but that doesn’t do the movie justice. Filmed for $150,000 and using animal mascot costumes for the animals, Hundreds of Beavers has more in common with Looney Tunes cartoons than Train Dreams. Wacky, weird, and constantly funny, Hundreds of Beavers is one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen.

Tickets are selling fast, and I’m not surprised.

On Wednesday morning, April 8, at 10:00 a.m., the Grand has Kiki’s Delivery Service. This 1989 classic by the legendary director Hayao Miyazaki is one of his most acclaimed films. There’s something about Studio Ghibli’s classic animation style that makes it timeless. This showing is presented in 4K, so it’s never looked better.
