Movies for the Week of May 22, 2026

BY JACK CAMERON for WEEKLY VOLCANO 5/22/26 |

The Blue Mouse Theater on North 26th and Proctor is having a special screening of Giuseppe Tornatore’s love letter to classic movie theaters, “Cinema Paradiso.” This special screening of the 1988 Italian film is presented with a Q&A session with UW Tacoma film professor Joanne Clarke Dillman, Ph.D.

The one-time screening is on Thursday, May 21, at 6 p.m.

Having finished its run of the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” the Blue Mouse is now ready for “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” The director, David Frankel, is so against the use of artificial intelligence, like all real artists, that the image in the movie that is said to be AI was actually drawn by a real artist who was told to “draw it like AI.”

“The Devil Wears Prada 2” is playing at the Blue Mouse May 22-24 at 3:45 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a last chance to see it on May 25 at 7 p.m.

On the night of May 23 at 11:30 p.m., you’ll have your monthly chance to join the party and watch a screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

On May 26 at 6 p.m., the Blue Mouse’s Tacoma Menopause Movie Series continues with “The Pink Pill: Sex, Drugs & Who Has Control.” This in-depth documentary interrogates the double standards in science, medicine, and society that shape how female desire is understood and often dismissed. This showing includes speakers Christine Vaccaro, DO, FACOG, MSCP; Aoife O’Sullivan, MD, ABFP, MSCP; and Marcy Meyer, MD, MSCP.

Over at the Grand Cinema, they have a few holdovers from the previous week.

This includes “Obsession,” a horror film in which a guy wishes the girl of his dreams would love him more than anything. It’s another case of “be careful what you wish for” as things turn dark.

The Grand also has “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” and the unstoppable science-fiction blockbuster “Project Hail Mary” continues its run.

If you’re in the mood for something new, Boots Riley (“Sorry to Bother You”) has a new movie out called “I Love Boosters.” No, it’s not about vaccines. This fun crime caper about a group of professional thieves who decide to take down a fashion maven will probably be the most fun you can have at the movies this week. Showings begin on Friday, May 22.

And if you’re looking for something old and refurbished, check out the Grand’s Weird Elephant presentation of “The Doom Generation,” restored in 4K. This 1995 road-trip fever dream of a movie has never looked better. This is the nearly three-hour director’s cut of the film. The film has two late-night screenings, on Friday, May 22, and Saturday, May 23, at 10 p.m.

If your tastes this week lead even more to the surreal, perhaps “By Design” is the movie for you. This is a movie in which Juliette Lewis turns into a chair. I’d explain more, but I think it’d probably just make things even more confusing. Rest assured, you’ve never seen something quite like this.

For those of you looking for something a little steamier, the Grand’s Tuesday Film Series is showing a 25th anniversary 4K screening of the 1991 Denzel Washington film “Mississippi Masala.”

And for something completely different, the Grand’s “You Haven’t Seen…?!” series continues with the live-action “Super Mario Bros.” movie from 1993. Don’t know anything about Mario? That’s fine. The makers of this didn’t seem to, either. The “You Haven’t Seen…?!” series showcases weird and cult movies that are made fun of live.

No matter what your movie tastes, Tacoma’s independent cinemas have something for everyone this week.
