Trivia starts at 6 p.m. and the first pitch against the L.A. Dodgers will be at 6:40 p.m. Located at 2920 E. R St. in Tacoma, the watch party is free to attend and seating is first-come, first-served.
The Marine Layer Podcast is hosted by TJ Mathewson and Lyle Goldstein, who both grew up in the Seattle area. Mathewson is from Ballard and Goldstein is from Kirkland, so the two never knew each other growing up. They became friends while they were both attending Arizona State University and bonded over their love for sports, especially the Mariners. Mathewson and Goldstein both grew up watching the Mariners play and often attended games.
They started the podcast on the tail of the 2022 Mariners season.
“The two of us had always talked about starting a Mariners podcast, and we had seen plenty of other examples of people successfully starting podcasts, so we decided it would be a good time to start,” they wrote in an email.
They knew right away that having a strong social media presence was important. They had a long-term goal of using social media as a way to help promote their long-form content.
“The podcast format is great for us because it allows us to be authentically ourselves when talking about this team, with no time restriction,” they wrote.

The podcast has 30,700 followers on Instagram, 6,400 followers on Facebook, 14,100 followers and 955,300 likes on TikTok, and 13,200 subscribers on YouTube.
The podcast bio describes it as “just a couple of guys spinning their thoughts about the Seattle Mariners, Major League Baseball, banning the bunt, and whatever else they decide to talk about. Whether it be in-season, off-season, postseason, or anywhere in between, this podcast has you covered.”
Mathewson and Goldstein adhere to a strict schedule, with a new episode available every couple of days. Most of the episodes are between 45 minutes and an hour long and provide discussions of all things Mariners.
One of the recent episodes, titled “Episode 430: Were the Mariners Just Overhyped to Start the Season? (Mailbag)” starts off with the hosts recapping their All-Star Week trip in Philadelphia. Then, they open up the mailbag and discuss listener questions.
Another recent episode, “Episode 429: Another Report About the Mariners Trading a Starter: Should We Believe It? + MLB Draft Reaction” includes the hosts’ reaction to the Mariners’ draft and a discussion about a Bob Nightengale report about the Mariners trading a starter.
Mathewson and Goldstein also occasionally have guests on the podcast. Some recent guests include Avery Chenier from the Gate 14 Podcast on episode 424, and Mariners catching prospect Luke Stevenson in episode 402.
The hosts said they’ve had some “insane” guests over the last three and a half years of the podcast, but their favorite has been sitting down with catcher Cal Raleigh in spring training this year.
Raleigh made his appearance on episode 371 of the podcast. They talked about his historic 2025 season, playing in the WBC, 2026 expectations, and more.
Some of their favorite overall moments from the podcast include the celebration episode following Game 5 of the 2025 ALDS, the Mariners’ win over the Tigers in 15 innings, and the Mariners’ Game 5 win in the 2025 ALCS.
“Our biggest accomplishments have been getting Mariners players on the podcast in person, and celebrating with fans of the podcast in person after the Mariners won the AL West in 2025,” they added.
While the podcast has a pretty solid following now, it wasn’t always that way. The hosts said it took over a year before they saw a sizable growth in the podcast, something they said “requires a bunch of patience to not be discouraged.”
Mathewson and Goldstein are very excited for the upcoming live trivia and watch party at EQC. This will be the second event like this they have hosted.
“Our trivia nights at EQC are a blast,” they wrote. “We have four sections of Mariners trivia, highlighting different topics, and the winner of each section wins a prize bag. As trivia is going along, we’ll also watch the Mariners game in progress. It’s a fun, interactive way to watch our favorite team.”
They prepare around 40 trivia questions that cover a wide range of baseball knowledge. They include statistical questions and non-statistical questions. If they are less familiar with a topic, they make sure to do lots of research in order to come up with creative and fun questions.
“Our fanbase has a ton of die-hard Mariners fans, and they love an event at EQC,” they wrote. “We have a huge listener base in the South Sound, and it is much easier for them to get to events at EQC, opposed to Seattle-based events.”
There will also be $5 beer specials during the game, and guests can place bets on the Mariners–Dodgers game, along with any other current or upcoming sporting events. For first-time bettors, it’s recommended to place bets in person at the Sportsbook window, where ticket writers can assist them. In-game bets can be made through the BetEQC app or with the betting kiosks available at both the Fife and Tacoma EQC properties.
