This week, we’re once again staying local, at Narrows Brewing in Proctor. It’s been a while since I’ve been to Narrows, and I really appreciate some of the small changes. I drank this Peachy Voyage Fruit Ale on a glorious summer afternoon on the back patio, in the shade of an umbrella. Narrows now serves food and allows kids.
Appearance: Delicious, golden, straw-colored beer with a glorious white head. I love the glassware at Narrows. This is a newer style of glass designed for craft beer; it’s a combination of the tulip style, with the neck helping to drive smells up to your nose, and the beauty of a high-quality pint glass. The glassware also helps to set off the beer’s head. All good beer is served with some foam on top. The foam helps release the smells and show that the beer is well-made.
On that nose, wow! That peach explodes out of the glass. Strong peach scents partner well with some residual malted barley, and very little, if any, hop flavor comes through. If I have one complaint about the peach, it’s a little more of the peach essence flavor rather than the robust, rounded flavors of a fully ripe peach. But that may also be because I prefer my peaches a touch past ripe, when they are pretty soft.
The first taste of the beer is great. The peach comes through, and the beer has a robust flavor, as I prefer. The light hops hide in the background, while the malt base creates a fullness that’s often missing in fruit beers. In some fruit beers, the flavor profile can feel like a candied version of the fruit, but Narrows makes this one feel like a full, hearty beer that is simply celebrating the peach.
Mouthfeel-wise, this beer really hits its goals. Sometimes fruit beers get too sugary and feel light, or you get the fake version of the flavor, and that takes away from the rest of the beer’s flavor profile. This is a crisp, solid ale that surrounds the peach.
Overall, this is a great beer. Narrows is a perfect spot to grab a patio beverage on your lunch break, if you are so lucky, or to bring your kids in for happy hour and get some pizza, too.
