Movies for the Week of May 29, 2026

BY JACK CAMERON for WEEKLY VOLCANO 5/29/26 |

The Blue Mouse Theater over on 26th and Proctor is continuing its run of The Devil Wears Prada 2. The popularity of the movie just can’t be denied. It was a big risk releasing a sequel to an iconic movie 20 years after the original, but that risk seems to have paid off.

Initially, it’s a little wonky as we catch up with the characters from the original and learn what has brought them all back together again. It manages to hit the nostalgia buttons without being pandering. It may have taken 20 years for The Devil Wears Prada to get a sequel, but it’s certainly a worthy one.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is playing at the Blue Mouse May 29-31 at 3:45 and 7 p.m., with a final showing at 7 p.m. June 1.

Across town at the Grand Cinema, they’ve got Backrooms, which is likely the oddest movie you could watch this week. Starring Renate Reinsve, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mark Duplass, and directed by Kane Parsons, Backrooms involves a group of people who find a secret area of a furniture store that only gets stranger the more they investigate it. The trailer gave me Severance vibes. If you’re looking for something a little different this week, Backrooms plays at the Grand beginning Friday, May 29.

The Exhibition on Screen series that brings museum art from across the globe to theaters has a new film showing, Frida Kahlo: The Making of an Icon. This deep dive into the iconic artist is guided by letters she wrote. For those who know the incredible art of Frida Kahlo and those who have never heard of her, this promises to be a thorough exploration of one of the 20th century’s most iconic artists. This film is showing only twice, at 1:45 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 2.

If you’re looking for something more romantic, the French film Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) might be to your liking. In 1760 France, an artist is commissioned to secretly paint a portrait of a woman being forced into an arranged marriage. As she gets to know the woman she’s painting, their relationship becomes something more. Winner of a Cannes Film Festival award, this is a film for lovers. Portrait of a Lady on Fire screens at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 3.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is part of the Grand’s new WednesGAYS series, in which they will be showing a popular LGBTQIA+ film every Wednesday in June and July.
