This week brings your last chance to see Spider-Man: Brand New Day at the Blue Mouse, an opportunity to see a couple of classic movies, and a chance to learn what a shadowcast is. We’ve got a lot to cover. So let’s get to it.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day – Aug. 14-16 at 3:15 and 7 p.m.; Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.
This is the last week to see Tom Holland in his latest Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, at the Blue Mouse. Spidey is joined by Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk as they try to stop a mysterious villain able to take control of others. It’s worth seeing on the big screen if for no other reason than Spidey has never looked better swinging through New York City than he does in Brand New Day. Check it out while you can.
Little Shop of Horrors – Live Shadowcast – Aug. 20 at 7 p.m.
What’s a shadowcast? A group of actors performs while the movie is playing. In this case, they’ll be doing the musical classic Little Shop of Horrors. When Seymour (Rick Moranis) discovers a carnivorous plant whose favorite meal is a human being, things get a little crazy. Even if you’ve seen Little Shop of Horrors before, you’ve never seen it quite like this.

The biggest blockbuster of the summer of 2026, Christopher Nolan’s latest big-budget epic is an adaptation of one of the first epics ever written down. The Odyssey is the first big-budget Hollywood movie to be filmed entirely with IMAX cameras. Nolan, known for enjoying the use of practical effects, used a 60-foot puppet for the Cyclops sequence rather than resorting to an entirely computer-generated image. Stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson have all talked about the challenging work they put into making this film.

You’ve seen them outside grocery stores. You buy their cookies every year. Cookie Queens is a coming-of-age documentary that follows a group of Girl Scouts as they enter Girl Scout Cookie season.

Matthew McConaughey plays the title character, Amziah King, a musician and beekeeper in the honey business in Oklahoma. He makes some enemies, including Kurt Russell’s character. But it’s just when you take everything from someone that they become the most dangerous.
Dazed & Confused – Weird Elephant – Aug. 14 and 15 at 10 p.m.
If The Rivals of Amziah King isn’t enough McConaughey for you, well, all right, all right, all right. Because Weird Elephant is presenting the legendary Richard Linklater stoner classic, Dazed & Confused. Feel like hanging out in the 1970s for a couple of hours this weekend? Head on down to the Grand.

The stoner fun does not end with Dazed & Confused. The Wrong Girls feels like if you mixed a girls’ night out movie with a stoner movie and added talking cats. Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat star as two stoners who find and use an experimental drug that should have killed them but instead puts them on the drug trip of a lifetime.

Sheep in the Box is a Japanese movie about a couple who lose a child and replace him with a robot that looks like him. The movie explores relationships, emotions and what it means to be alive.
The Goonies – Free Family Flick – Aug. 15 at 10 a.m.
The Grand is rightly showing this month’s Free Family Flick in two theaters because it’s the Richard Donner children’s adventure The Goonies. If you’re a member of Generation X like I am, this movie likely means a lot to you. Long before he was helping Frodo with the ring, Sean Astin was leading the Goonies on an adventure of a lifetime.
Six: The Musical Live! – Aug. 15 at 4 p.m.; Aug. 16 at noon; Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.
Six: The Musical Live! is a live recording of the original West End cast reuniting at London’s Vaudeville Theatre in front of a sold-out audience to bring the pop-inspired musical Six: The Musical to life. Six is about the six wives of Henry VIII as a 21st-century onstage band, the Ladies in Waiting. This wild and infectious musical is only playing three times at the Grand. So catch it while you can.
Urgh! A Music War with the Professors of Urgh! – Aug. 16 at 4 p.m.
Urgh! A Music War is more than a concert film. It’s one of the foundational documents of the late 1970s and early 1980s music scene, with performances by the Police, Devo, X, Joan Jett, XTC, the Go-Go’s and Gary Numan, as well as underground groups like the Dead Kennedys, Magazine, the Cramps, Pere Ubu, Au Pairs and Klaus Nomi. This screening also includes presentations before and after by the co-hosts of the A Very Opinionated Look at Urgh! podcast.
Welcome Space Brothers – Aug. 18 at 1:45 and 7 p.m.
The 1970s were a weird time. And Welcome Space Brothers dives into one of the weirder things from the ’70s. The 2023 documentary dives into the Uranus Academy of Science, a UFO cult that became a public-access television sensation in the 1980s.
Mamma Mia! – Craft Night – Aug. 19 at 7 and 7:10 p.m.
It’s that time again. Craft night! This is when you get to bring your crafts to the theater and work on them with the theater lights on while a movie plays in the background. This month’s movie is the crowd-pleasing musical Mamma Mia! As I write this, there are only 11 tickets left for the 7 p.m. showing. So I’m not surprised they added a 7:10 p.m. screening.
Next week, the Blue Mouse is bringing Toy Story 5, and the Grand is going to show everyone’s favorite dinosaur movie, Jurassic Park.
