This week sees the Blue Mouse continuing its run of Moana, the Grand continuing its run of The Odyssey, a free outdoor movie, and the new film The Rose of Nevada. Both theaters also have some interesting documentaries worth checking out. Here’s what the theaters have this week.

Echoes of the Sound & Makers on the Tide – Documentary Double Feature
July 23 at 7:00 p.m.
Echoes of the Sound – In 1968, an orca called Hugo was taken from his pod and put in captivity. This documentary follows Hugo’s journey and the impact human intervention has on the lives of orcas. This film challenges viewers to consider what responsibility humanity has to nature. This is one of two documentaries in a double feature.
Makers on the Tide – The Willits Brothers made red cedar canoes for fifty years right here in Tacoma. This documentary tells the story of these intrepid entrepreneurs. An untold tale of Tacoma’s past using historical footage, photos, and other resources, Makers on the Tide preserves a piece of Tacoma history. This is the second of two documentaries in a double feature.
Moana – July 24–26 at 3:45 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. • July 27 at 7:00 p.m.
The live-action version of Moana, starring Dwayne Johnson, continues Disney’s tradition of taking animated classics and turning them into live-action movies. This one has the distinction of having Dwayne Johnson play the part he voiced in the cartoon ten years ago.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show – July 25 at 11:30 p.m.
Every month the Blue Mouse presents the anarchic musical classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Tim Curry absolutely eats the scenery in this fun and ridiculous film. If you’ve never gone to one of these screenings, you’re missing out on a cultural touchstone that has lasted for decades. Participation and dressing up are highly encouraged.

Maddie’s Secret – July 23 at 4:40 p.m., 6:45 p.m. • July 24–26 at 2:20 p.m., 4:45 p.m. • July 27 at 4:40 p.m.
Maddie (John Early) isn’t ready for what happens when Maddie’s recipes become an online sensation. When the spotlight of fame hits Maddie, it threatens to bring out a secret Maddie has been keeping for a long time. This is writer/director/star John Early’s first feature film, and early word is good, with a new, unique voice in comedy making itself known.

Likely to be the biggest blockbuster of the summer of 2026, Christopher Nolan’s latest big-budget epic is an adaptation of one of the first epics ever written down. The Odyssey is the first big-budget Hollywood movie to be filmed entirely with IMAX cameras. Nolan, known for enjoying the use of practical effects, is said to have used a sixty-foot puppet for the Cyclops sequence rather than resorting to an entirely computer-generated image. Stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson have all talked about the challenging work they put into making this film.

I haven’t had a chance to see this one yet, but I’ve been told by friends that if you want to have a VERY interesting date night conversation, go see The Invite, a movie in which two couples have a night in, but it is anything but calm. Funny and unlike most any movie you’ll see this year, The Invite stars Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz, Edward Norton, and Olivia Wilde. Wilde also directed this comedy.

A live theater recording of the hit musical, Hadestown. Hadestown won eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical. This genre-defying musical blends modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz, following two intertwining love stories: Orpheus and Eurydice, and King Hades and his wife Persephone. It’s a musical theater performance you won’t want to miss.

After disappearing 30 years ago, the fishing vessel Rose of Nevada returns to port in a derelict fishing village. The superstitious villagers decide the boat needs to go back out to sea. But when the new crew returns, the village isn’t how they left it. Written and directed by Mark Jenkin, this haunting, mesmerizing story will keep you guessing until the end. It’s not a movie you forget.

Join the Grand and TAPCO Credit Union for the latest in their Free Outdoor Movie Series. They will set up a thirty-foot-wide inflatable screen. Bring your own chairs, blankets, and snacks. The movie starts at dusk. The free movie this time is Goat. A small goat has big dreams of playing pro roarball, a full-contact sport dominated by the fastest and fiercest animals in the world, but this goat has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the pros.
The Shepherd and the Bear – July 28 at 1:45 p.m., 7:00 p.m.
As part of the Tuesday Documentary Series, this French documentary follows an aging shepherd dealing with finding a successor and dealing with the reintroduction of brown bears to the area. This film explores the tension between modernity and tradition.
Kiki – July 29 at 7:00 p.m.
WednesGAYS continues with Kiki. Twenty-five years after Paris Is Burning, Kiki is a documentary that dives back into the fierce world of voguing battles in the Kiki scene of New York City. The coverage of these competitions works as a gateway into the lives of LGBTQ youth of color in NYC.
